Job description
Role overview
This opening is for a flexible-staffed Law Office Assistant position within the Public Defender Agency’s Operations team in Anchorage, Alaska. The role focuses on advanced clerical support for administrative case management, including handling discovery materials, pleadings, and new appointment documents, along with pre-screening work that supports case assignment. The position also provides backup coverage for related legal support tasks when needed.
About the organization
The Public Defender Agency serves people who cannot afford legal counsel and is appointed by the court in cases where constitutional representation is required. Law Office Assistants are a key part of that mission, working alongside attorneys and other staff to process and route case materials quickly and accurately. They also act as a communication point for the courts, opposing counsel, and members of the public.
What you will do
You will support administrative case management by organizing incoming case documents, distributing discovery and pleadings, handling appointment-related workflow, and assisting with pre-screening for assignment decisions. You may also be asked to step in for other legal support functions as operational needs change.
Work environment and schedule
The office is based in downtown Anchorage near the Nesbett and Boney courthouses. Standard working hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with a one-hour lunch break at noon. Parking downtown is provided by the agency near the office.
Training and probation
The first six months in the agency are a probationary training period. During this time, you will receive both formal instruction and hands-on guidance from your supervisor and colleagues. After successful completion of probation, the role may become eligible for telework.
Flexible staffing structure
This position can be hired at either the level 1 or level 2 range depending on the applicant’s background and experience. If hired at the lower level, the employee will take on progressively more complex duties over time. Once proficiency at the higher level is demonstrated and the minimum qualifications are met, advancement to the higher range may occur.
