Role Overview

Join Downer as a Laboratory Technician specializing in asphalt testing at our Hope Valley and Gosnells locations in Western Australia. This position involves hands-on materials testing duties shared between our NATA-accredited laboratories and active project sites, ensuring the highest quality of asphalt used in key infrastructure projects throughout Perth and the surrounding regions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct testing on asphalt, bitumen, aggregates, and related road construction materials in alignment with Australian Standards, Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) specifications, and WA Test Methods.
  • Prepare samples, perform laboratory tests, document results, and maintain precise records under a rigorous NATA/ISO 17025 quality system.
  • Regularly visit project sites to core and sample materials alongside paving crews to monitor product quality.
  • Support quality control processes during production and paving operations to assure product standards.
  • Maintain and safely operate laboratory equipment, ensuring it is calibrated and functional.
  • Participate in investigating test outcomes and product performance issues as necessary.
  • Engage proactively in toolbox meetings, safety programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate effectively with production, paving, and operational teams.

Candidate Profile

  • Possesses a Certificate III or IV in Laboratory Techniques, Construction Materials Testing, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience in asphalt-related testing, construction materials evaluation, or laboratory environments.
  • Holds a current driver's license and a General Construction Induction (White) Card.
  • Familiarity with asphalt testing methods, Australian Standards, and quality assurance systems.
  • Detail-oriented with strong skills in accurate record-keeping and reporting.
  • Comfortable performing physically demanding outdoor work and site-based sampling.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Committed to workplace safety and adheres to Downer's Zero Harm safety philosophy.
  • Beneficial, but not required: knowledge of WA Test Methods and MRWA specifications.
