Role Overview
We are seeking a full-time Laboratory Assistant for the LHSC Float position based in the South Okanagan area, specifically Osoyoos. This role is 100% onsite and involves handling and processing blood and other laboratory specimens with speed and precision while delivering exceptional patient care and empathy in challenging situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver an exceptional customer experience, engaging patients with care and professionalism.
- Enter patient and test data accurately, including Ministry of Health requisition forms.
- Perform quality blood draws and collect other specimens using proficient venipuncture techniques aligned with Dynacare's values.
- Sort specimens, conduct ECGs, and prepare samples following protocols to ensure readiness for laboratory processing and transport.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in strict accordance with privacy standards.
- Support meeting departmental quality standards, regulatory requirements, and performance indicators.
Qualifications and Experience
- Certification by CSMLS or BCSLS and/or graduation from a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program accredited by BCSLS or a recognized equivalent.
- Alternatively, candidates holding a related scientific bachelor's degree or international MLA/MLT credentials combined with at least one year of patient-facing phlebotomy experience may be considered.
- Strong customer focus with an empathetic approach to patient interactions, especially during blood collection.
- Demonstrated skill in managing patient anxiety during specimen collection in a calm and reassuring manner.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks in deadline-driven environments.
- Detail-oriented with strong accuracy.
- Proficient English communication skills, both written and verbal, to clearly instruct patients.
- Flexibility to attend shifts across various LHSC locations in the region.
- Typing speed requirement of 25 to 40 words per minute.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Work primarily in a medical laboratory and office setting.
- Requires walking and performing repetitive motions.
- Float between designated locations as necessary.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods; extensive computer usage expected.
- Must occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
- Exposure to biohazards, temperature fluctuations, and varying noise levels.
- Physical requirements include frequent standing, sitting, bending.
Compensation & Schedule
- Full-time position: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
- Hourly wage range: $27.00 to $30.75, determined by experience and education.
