Job description

Overview

The Office of Public Engagement and Communications for the State of Maryland is hiring a Print Shop Manager to oversee the agency’s internal print production work in Annapolis, Maryland. This is a position-specific recruitment open to all qualified applicants, and the resulting eligible list may be used to fill this opening as well as other current or future vacancies for the same role or function.

The role is graded at 16.

What the role involves

This position combines print production, file preparation, equipment operation, and administrative coordination. The selected candidate will manage internal print requests, set up files for printing with professional design software, produce high-quality printed pieces, and assemble official ceremonial certificates for the Comptroller.

The ideal candidate will be highly detail-driven, comfortable working in a hands-on production environment, and experienced with print shop workflow from intake through final delivery. Strong accuracy, speed, and teamwork are important, along with the ability to stay organized in a deadline-heavy setting.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent high school equivalency certificate, along with four years of administrative staff or professional work experience.

Education obtained outside the United States must be supported by a detailed course-by-course foreign credential evaluation from a recognized U.S. evaluation service.

Substitutions and equivalencies

  • Up to four years of the required experience may be replaced by college coursework, at a rate of 30 college credits for each year of experience.
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution may be used instead of the required experience.
  • A master’s degree from an accredited institution may also be used instead of the required experience.
  • Military service as a commissioned officer, when it involved staff work tied to rules, procedures, policy, process administration, or acting as a staff assistant to a senior officer, may be substituted year for year for the required experience.

Preferred background

The agency would especially like candidates who have a bachelor’s degree and around two years of experience in print production or print shop operations, particularly in job intake, scheduling, or operating production and finishing equipment.

Helpful experience also includes working with digital production printers, wide-format printers, cutters, laminators, binders, folders, and similar finishing tools. Experience keeping production logs, monitoring job progress, and managing workflow in a professional print setting is also valued.

Strong candidates will be able to prepare print-ready artwork in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and may be able to show a portfolio or work samples. Good writing and editing ability, along with strong organization, time management, and communication skills, will support success in the role.

The position also calls for independent judgment, collaboration under pressure, excellent proofreading, and the ability to handle several high-priority jobs at once without losing quality or accuracy.

Selection and employment conditions

Applicants must provide complete and accurate information in the application, including position-specific experience and all education details. Incomplete submissions may be rejected. Only information submitted by the closing date will be considered, and resumes cannot be used instead of a completed application.

Qualified candidates will be placed on an unranked list that remains active for at least one year.

Selected candidates must already be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship, as the employer does not sponsor visas. New hires and transfers must also successfully complete fingerprinting.

Certain criminal convictions may disqualify applicants, including any felony; crimes involving moral turpitude such as embezzlement, fraud, tax evasion, or bribery; identity theft or impersonation; assault or battery; and controlled dangerous substance offenses other than marijuana, regardless of when they occurred or how the offense is described.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old because of the nature of the agency’s business.

Application instructions and contact information

The online application method is strongly preferred. If materials are submitted by email, at least one page must include the applicant’s full name, the recruitment number from the bulletin, and the last four digits of the Social Security number.
