Role Overview and Responsibilities

This Investment Officer position located in Garissa and Dadaab entails:

Due Diligence & Investment Preparation (60%)

  • Address inquiries from potential borrowers, aid their application process for financing.
  • Explain investment products, repayment obligations, and financial responsibility to entrepreneurs.
  • Perform investment appraisals, gather detailed personal, business, and guarantee data, and set up investment accounts.
  • Draft and execute investment contracts, coordinate disbursement in-kind.
  • Conduct on-site due diligence, prepare necessary documents, and liaise with Business Development Advisors and Associates.
  • Report findings to Portfolio Manager and assist in compiling credit reports for Investment Committee reviews.
  • Capture entrepreneur photographs, secure photo waivers, and ensure accurate publication on fundraising platforms.

Portfolio Management (20%)

  • Maintain excellent customer service through daily engagements and visits to foster strong borrower relationships.
  • Collaborate with the Business Development team to facilitate borrower success and conduct client monitoring.
  • Keep delinquency and default metrics below organizational targets set annually.
  • Monitor borrower information and communicate borrower status effectively with stakeholders.
  • Engage actively in weekly Portfolio Review Meetings as a key team member.
  • Track borrower payments and maintain contact information systems.
  • Coordinate with Finance & Admin to issue invoices and reconcile monthly investment transactions.
  • Interact with governmental and judicial bodies to follow up on outstanding payments.
  • Ensure compliance with partnership reporting obligations and journaling standards.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by supervisors.

Investment Management System (20%)

  • Update disbursement and repayment transactions in the CBS investment management system (Mifos-based).
  • Maintain proficiency in investment software; collaborate with system providers to enhance process efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assist in system design and parameter configuration to meet cross-departmental requirements.
  • Manage user security and ensure segregation of duties.
  • Advise management on automation of lending processes; confirm accurate posting and reconciliation within the core banking system.
  • Participate in operational systems reviews and recommend improvements.
  • Work alongside lending staff to increase system data accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Prepare related system reports and undertake administrative responsibilities.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or related discipline.
  • Fluent in English and Swahili; knowledge of local languages advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Islamic lending practices is a plus.
  • Strong financial and accounting expertise, understanding Kenyan business financial policies.
  • Extensive experience in investment management, microfinance, capital leases, and financing small and medium enterprises is strongly preferred.
  • Background in customer debt management and lending environments.
  • Proven track record in advising entrepreneurs.
  • Experience with investment management system software.
  • Assertive and decisive, capable of delivering firm messages to debtors and ensuring full repayment.
  • Skillful in managing challenging clients and achieving favorable outcomes.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and follow-through capacity.
  • Familiarity with civil court procedures and experience in litigation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated perseverance, integrity, and analytical thinking.
  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Authorization to legally work in Kenya.
