Role Overview
The Recovery Officer plays a critical role in managing overdue loan accounts through proactive follow-ups, site inspections, coordination with local authorities, manual settlements of outstanding balances, account restrictions, and resolving payment defaulters' issues.
Key Responsibilities
Loan Portfolio Monitoring (40%)
- Track credit portfolios and assess default risks, recommending recovery strategies.
- Flag repayment inconsistencies and escalate as needed.
- Prepare monthly and weekly portfolio reports for management and credit reviews.
- Analyze Portfolio At Risk (PAR) reports, including product, individual, and SME breakdowns.
- Evaluate loan product performance via data collection and analysis.
- Report weekly loan account turnover.
- Implement trigger systems for credit impairment alerts and suggest remedies.
- Support loan and compliance officers in managing non-performing loans.
- Engage borrowers through calls, visits, and reminders for scheduled repayments.
- Conduct post-disbursement checks to ensure proper loan usage and performance.
- Monitor defaulters to prevent recurrent non-compliance.
- Maintain PAR levels compliant with Central Bank of Kenya regulations.
- Coordinate with Finance to reconcile received payments promptly.
- Meet monthly PAR reduction targets.
- Negotiate repayment arrangements with clients in default.
- Initiate legal receivership processes when necessary.
Debt Recovery (60%)
- Oversee portfolios of delinquent loans, utilizing sound credit judgment and collection strategies within established policies to minimize losses.
- Ensure adherence to Inkomoko’s credit policies during recovery efforts.
- Prepare and maintain monthly collection and status reports.
- Drive consistent reduction of non-performing debts through assertive recoveries and restructuring options.
- Maintain frequent contact with borrowers via calls, visits, and follow-ups to implement remedial plans.
- Issue demand and reminder communications to defaulting clients and review documentation for accuracy.
- Collaborate closely with legal counsel to meet regulatory compliance standards.
- Develop and regularly update credit and recovery policies ensuring compliance.
Qualifications and Experience
- University degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Fluency in English and Swahili; proficiency in additional local languages is advantageous.
- At least 3 years of experience in banking or microfinance institutions focusing on credit monitoring or loan recovery.
- Strong knowledge of microfinance or banking operations, credit risk, fraud prevention, and debt management.
- Proven experience handling customer relations and debt collection.
- Ability to deliver difficult messages firmly and persuade debtors to complete repayments.
- Familiarity with civil court procedures and litigation experience preferred.
- Demonstrates perseverance, integrity, and critical thinking.
- Legal authorization to work in Kenya.
- Experience working in local areas is a plus.
