Investment Officer - Deep Tech & Digital Equity Investments

About the Role

This opportunity is based at the European Investment Bank's (EIB) headquarters in Luxembourg, requiring regular office attendance. The EIB, recognized as the European Union's bank, offers a vibrant international and multicultural workplace environment along with relocation assistance. This permanent Grade 5 position is within the Operations Directorate (Equity, Growth Capital and Project Finance Department) in the Deep Tech, Digital & Life Sciences - Equity & Growth Capital Division, specifically the Deep Tech & Digital Unit.

Role Purpose

The Deep Tech & Digital Unit focuses on direct investments to bolster Europe's deep tech ecosystem. Collaborating with top venture and growth investors, the team finances high-growth technology companies across sectors such as space, defence and dual use, artificial intelligence, autonomous robotics, semiconductors, and quantum technologies. Investments typically range from EUR 10 million to EUR 150 million using equity risk instruments, including venture debt and convertible structures, supporting companies crucial for Europe's competitiveness and strategic autonomy through their growth and scale-up phases.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead direct equity-type investments throughout the entire investment process, from opportunity origination, screening, due diligence, structuring and approvals, to execution and ongoing monitoring post-signature.
• Identify and generate investment opportunities by mapping the European deep tech and digital landscape, fostering relationships with founders, investors, corporate entities, and partners aligned with the EIB's strategic objectives.
• Conduct thorough due diligence assessing business models, financial forecasts, cap table structures, technology distinctiveness, market positions, scalability, management quality, risk-return balance, and exit prospects.
• Design investment structures utilizing appropriate equity-risk tools including venture debt, convertibles, warrants, and hybrid instruments.
• Develop robust investment proposals and documentation suitable for internal approval highlighting strategic rationale, investment thesis, and associated risks.
• Negotiate and finalize financing contracts in collaboration with internal teams and external legal counsel ensuring compliance with commercial, legal, risk, and policy standards.
• Oversee portfolio company performance post-investment, monitoring milestones, financial health, covenants, and risks, supporting additional financing or restructuring needs prior to transition to portfolio management.
• Enhance internal processes and knowledge by contributing sector insights, refining investment methodologies, and updating templates and tools.
• Represent EIB at industry events, conferences, and panel discussions.

Qualifications and Skills

• A university degree equivalent to at least a Bachelor's, preferably in Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, or related fields.
• A minimum of five years' relevant experience in venture debt, venture/growth capital, private equity, or technology investment banking, with technology sector operational experience considered advantageous.
• Proficiency in financial modeling, understanding of equity risk instruments mechanics, and associated legal frameworks.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Keen sector knowledge in deep tech and familiarity with equity-risk financing instruments such as venture debt, equity, kickers, convertibles, and warrants.
• Awareness of the EIB's mission, strategic focus areas, and regulatory environment.
• Fluent command of English and/or French is required, with good knowledge of the other language beneficial; proficiency in additional EU languages is a plus.
