Job description

Role overview

Whānau Āwhina Plunket is hiring an enthusiastic, community-minded Injury Prevention Coordinator to support its Community Services work in Wellington. The role is focused on child safety and injury prevention programmes that help families, strengthen local communities, and improve outcomes for tamariki across Aotearoa.

In this position, you will work with whānau, volunteers, community partners, and both clinical and community teams to deliver prevention initiatives, provide practical guidance, and share child safety messages throughout the region. A key part of the job is supporting child restraint installation services, running community education sessions, and developing relationships with stakeholders to improve access to support, especially for Māori and Pacific communities and others facing higher inequities.

This is a full-time role of 35 hours per week. It is fixed term and starts as soon as possible, continuing until 25 June 2027. The work will vary from day to day, with time spent in the community delivering programmes and assisting whānau, as well as virtual coordination, stakeholder management, and planning future activities.

What the role involves

  • Coordinating and delivering injury prevention and child safety programmes.
  • Providing education and practical support to whānau and community groups.
  • Supporting child restraint installation services.
  • Facilitating sessions that share child safety and injury prevention information.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with community stakeholders and partners.
  • Helping improve access to services for priority Māori and Pacific populations and communities experiencing inequity.
  • Working both in the community and remotely to organise initiatives and future plans.

About you

You will be motivated by the opportunity to support families, connect with communities, and contribute to safer environments for tamariki. The organisation is looking for someone who can work collaboratively, communicate well, and take a proactive approach to improving outcomes.

Skills and experience needed

  • Proven ability to build trusted relationships with diverse people and communities.
  • Confident communication skills for one-to-one, group, and stakeholder interactions.
  • Experience leading education sessions, presenting information, or engaging audiences.
  • Capability to work independently while maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Strong planning, organisation, and time management skills.
  • A continuous improvement mindset and commitment to high-quality service delivery.
  • Good understanding of local communities and comfort working across different settings.
  • A full New Zealand driver licence and willingness to travel around the region.
  • Child Restraint Technician qualification, or the willingness to complete it within three months of starting.
  • Experience working with Māori, Pacific, and other priority communities is valued, along with practical understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in day-to-day work.

What the organisation offers

  • The chance to help improve outcomes for tamariki and whānau across Aotearoa.
  • A values-driven workplace with a strong focus on equity and community wellbeing.
  • Learning and professional development opportunities.
  • Retail discounts and employee benefits through the employee assistance programme.
  • A supportive, collaborative team environment.
  • Flexible working arrangements where operationally suitable.
