Job description
About the opportunity
Whānau Āwhina Plunket is looking for an energetic, community-minded Injury Prevention Coordinator to join its Community Services team in Waikato. The role is central to delivering child safety and injury prevention initiatives that support whānau, strengthen community capability, and improve outcomes for tamariki.
In this position, you will work with whānau, volunteers, community partners, clinical staff, and community teams to coordinate and deliver injury prevention activities, share practical education, and promote child safety messages across the region. The work also includes supporting child restraint installation services, running community education sessions, and developing strong relationships with key stakeholders to improve access to support for priority Māori and Pacific communities and other groups experiencing inequity.
This is a full-time, fixed-term role of 35 hours per week, commencing as soon as possible and continuing until 25 June 2027. The role combines community-based work with virtual coordination duties, so your days will vary between delivering programmes on the ground, supporting whānau directly, managing relationships, and planning upcoming activities.
What you will do
- Coordinate and deliver injury prevention programmes and child safety initiatives across the Waikato region.
- Support child restraint installation services and provide practical guidance to whānau.
- Facilitate education sessions and share child safety information with groups and communities.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with community stakeholders and partner organisations.
- Work collaboratively with volunteers, clinicians, and community teams to improve access to support.
- Plan, organise, and manage multiple priorities while contributing to future programme activity.
- Work in a way that reflects pro-equity practice and culturally responsive approaches.
About you
You will be someone who cares deeply about whānau wellbeing, enjoys connecting with people, and is motivated by creating safer environments for tamariki. You bring confidence, initiative, and a collaborative approach, along with the ability to work well across different settings and communities.
Skills and experience needed
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships with a diverse range of people and communities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience presenting information, facilitating learning sessions, or engaging groups.
- The ability to work autonomously while sustaining strong stakeholder relationships.
- Solid planning, organisation, and time management capability.
- A commitment to ongoing improvement and high-quality service delivery.
- An understanding of local communities and confidence working across different environments.
- A full New Zealand driver licence and willingness to travel throughout the region as needed.
- Child Restraint Technician qualification, or the willingness to obtain it within three months of starting.
- Experience working with Māori, Pacific, and other priority communities is highly desirable.
- An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it is applied in practice is also highly valued.
What we offer
- A chance to contribute to better outcomes for tamariki and whānau across Aotearoa.
- A values-led organisation with a strong focus on equity and community wellbeing.
- Learning and development opportunities to support your professional growth.
- Retail discounts and employee benefits through the employee assistance programme.
- A supportive, collaborative team culture.
- Flexible working arrangements where operational needs allow.
