Job overview
The Import and Clearing Officer will oversee the full import and customs-clearing cycle, making sure goods are processed quickly, economically, and in line with all legal and internal requirements. The position is key to keeping operations moving by ensuring shipment paperwork is correct and deliveries arrive without unnecessary delay.
What you will do
- Manage the import process from the moment a shipment is initiated through to final delivery.
- Draft, check, and maintain import paperwork such as Form M, PAAR, Bills of Lading, invoices, and related regulatory documents.
- Work closely with customs officers, shipping lines, freight forwarders, clearing agents, and agencies such as NAFDAC and SON.
- Ensure all clearing activities comply with Nigerian customs laws and applicable government rules.
- Monitor shipment progress and keep internal teams informed with timely status updates.
- Identify and fix clearing delays, documentation gaps, and other shipment issues as they arise.
- Oversee duty payments while keeping clearing costs under control.
- Keep complete and accurate records for every import transaction.
- Arrange transport and delivery of cleared goods to the company’s required locations.
- Assess the performance of clearing agents and other service providers.
- Follow company procedures, policies, and internal control standards.
- Handle additional logistics and supply chain tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
- Between 5 and 7 years of relevant experience in import, clearing, or logistics work in a corporate or industrial setting.
- Professional certifications such as CISCP or CILT will be an advantage.
- Experience using ERP systems, especially SAP, is also beneficial.
- Strong working knowledge of import documentation and regulatory compliance.
- Solid understanding of customs-clearing procedures.
- Ability to coordinate logistics and supply chain activities effectively.
- Skill in managing vendors and internal/external stakeholders.
- Professionalism, integrity, initiative, adaptability, and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to solve problems, stay accountable, and work well with others.
