Role summary
The Health and Safety Officer for transport operations will be responsible for making sure vehicle movement and logistics activities comply with all applicable safety rules and legal requirements at Dangote Cement Transport. The position focuses on building, rolling out, and enforcing safety measures designed specifically for transport operations.
Key responsibilities
- Create and put into practice health and safety policies and procedures for transport-related work.
- Carry out routine inspections and audits to verify compliance with local and national safety regulations.
- Train and support transport employees on safe work practices, emergency response steps, and correct use of equipment.
- Identify operational risks and introduce controls to reduce them across transportation activities.
- Review accidents and incidents, determine the underlying causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Keep safety documentation up to date and compile reports on transport safety performance.
- Work with local agencies and regulators on transport safety standards and compliance matters.
- Serve as the point of contact for safety issues affecting the fleet and drivers.
- Track how well current safety programs are working and propose enhancements where needed.
- Take part in safety meetings and share relevant safety metrics and insights with management.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science, or another relevant discipline is required.
- Professional certification in occupational health and safety, such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or an equivalent qualification, is required.
- At least 2 years of experience in a safety function within transportation or logistics is needed.
- A degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related subject is preferred, especially from a science or engineering background.
- Additional certification or diploma in fire safety, health, or environmental management from a recognized institution is an advantage, including qualifications such as NEBOSH, IGC, or NVQ Level 6.
- Working knowledge of fleet safety management is important.
- Strong understanding of health and safety regulations that apply to transport operations is essential.
- Good mentoring, training, and development practices are expected.
- Ability to communicate effectively and build strong working relationships is required.
- Comfort working independently and as part of a team is necessary.
- Proficiency with MS Office and safety management software is required.
