Role overview
The Human Resources Specialist, Shared Services and Benefits is the main HR contact for employees, offering responsive, high-quality support and helping create a smooth, consistent employee experience. The position handles guidance across a wide range of HR areas, such as benefits, leave management, HR policies, HR systems, payroll-related questions, and employee lifecycle activities.
The role also partners on HR operations and benefits administration, checks data accuracy, spots patterns in employee issues, and works with the broader HR team to strengthen processes, training materials, resources, and the overall service experience.
Key responsibilities
- Act as the first contact for employee HR questions and service requests, providing prompt, accurate, and professional assistance.
- Investigate and resolve HR issues by coordinating with HR Business Partners, Centers of Excellence, Payroll, IT, managers, and external vendors until the matter is fully closed.
- Guide employees on benefits and leave matters, including health and welfare coverage, FMLA, disability, and other leave programs.
- Assist with the annual Open Enrollment cycle, including communications and employee education sessions.
- Complete employee lifecycle transactions and keep HRIS information accurate through regular reviews and validation checks.
- Review benefits records, handle vendor invoice processing, and correct discrepancies.
- Keep HR reference materials current and encourage use of employee self-service tools.
- Spot repeated questions and operational pain points, then work with HR partners to improve training, communications, systems, and workflows.
- Monitor service metrics and support continuous improvement efforts that raise HR service quality and the employee experience.
Skills and competencies
This role calls for strong customer service, clear communication, careful attention to detail, solid organization, analytical thinking, and the ability to manage several priorities at once. It also requires discretion with confidential information, a collaborative approach, comfort using HR technology and Microsoft Office, and a genuine interest in improving HR processes and growing in the profession.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
- At least 2 years of experience in Human Resources, HR Operations, Shared Services, Benefits Administration, or a similar HR area.
- Minimum 1 year of experience administering employee benefits and leave programs.
- Background supporting employees in a customer service-oriented setting.
- Hands-on experience with HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office.
- Working knowledge of FMLA, ADA, COBRA, and other relevant employment regulations.
- SHRM-CP, PHR, or a similar HR certification is preferred.
Compensation and benefits
The pay range for this position is $50,000 to $75,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
