Role Overview
The Home Educator delivers comprehensive developmental, social, and health services to families, including home visits, socialization activities, advocacy, and crisis support, aligned with federal and state regulations and Head Start standards. The role involves nurturing infants and toddlers in home settings, tailoring experiences to each family's needs, and fostering strong partnerships with Early Head Start families to promote a safe, healthy environment conducive to child growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry a caseload of 12 Early Head Start (EHS) families or expecting families, conducting weekly 90-minute home visits.
- Build trusting and supportive relationships with children and their families.
- Collaborate with parents to devise and execute weekly home visit plans grounded in child assessments and family needs.
- Maintain confidentiality and manage client records accurately.
- Observe, assess, and document children’s health, skills, behaviors, growth, and development.
- Organize group socialization opportunities for children and parents.
- Advocate for families and serve as a liaison between families, programs, and community resources.
- Integrate health, nutrition, mental health, parental involvement, and special needs components into services delivered, including services for pregnant women.
- Identify children with special needs and facilitate referrals as necessary.
- Encourage family involvement in parent committee meetings, social groups, and trainings.
- Provide transportation support for families to aid participation when needed.
- Participate in reflective supervision and staff meetings regularly.
- Maintain detailed documentation and timely data entry into the Child Plus system.
- Support children's transition to Pre-K or other childcare programs.
- Create developmentally appropriate nurturing environments, plan and implement daily lessons utilizing required curricula and resources, and track child progress diligently.
- Conduct screenings and developmental assessments with comprehensive record-keeping.
- Collaborate as a member of multidisciplinary teams and engage in ongoing training and professional growth.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in alignment with team goals.
Qualifications and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Child Development or a related field (transcripts required).
- Completion of six semester units related to infant and toddler development, meeting licensing standards with grades of 'C' or higher.
- One to two years’ experience as a Home Educator, or in a licensed infant/toddler or preschool setting.
- Valid Class C driver’s license with liability insurance and access to a personal vehicle.
- Proficiency in written and verbal communication; bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in Early Childhood Development.
- Ability to use computer systems for developmental data entry.
- Strong organizational skills for planning and implementing educational programs.
- Sound judgment in making decisions prioritizing children’s welfare and confidentiality.
- Emotional stability and appropriate role modeling behaviors when working with children, adolescents, and adults facing mental or behavioral health challenges.
- Clearance from DOJ, FBI, and Child Abuse indices or an approved exemption is required.
- Pre-employment physical, PPD test/risk assessment, and proof of vaccinations (Tdap, MMR, and influenza) are mandatory.
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly pay range: $25.50 to $28.50, adjusted according to California law and based on experience.
- $2,500 sign-on bonus.
