Job description
Overview
The Department of Education in Western Australia is building a pool of Home Education Moderators for permanent and fixed-term opportunities, available as both full-time and part-time roles, that may be filled at any point during 2026 through to the end of July 2027. Offers may be made whenever suitable vacancies arise within this period.
Role summary
As a Home Education Moderator, you will assess the education programs delivered by families registered for home education in the South Metropolitan Region. You will confirm that students are making appropriate progress during review meetings with families. The role calls for a strong working knowledge of the Western Australian Curriculum, sound awareness of suitable learning programs across all schooling phases, and the ability to adapt education to individual needs in a home learning environment.
Under the School Education Act 1999, parents may choose to educate their children at home and take responsibility for learning during compulsory school years. The Department registers and oversees home educators to ensure the learning programs provided at home meet each student’s individual requirements.
This position reports to the Director of Education, South Metropolitan Education Region, and is responsible for assessing and certifying the learning programs and progress of home-educated students from Pre-Primary to Year 12. The South Metropolitan Education Region spans the metropolitan area from Fremantle to Roleystone and extends south to Pinjarra and Waroona.
Although families are generally grouped to support regional allocation, the role involves substantial travel, including attending meetings in home educators’ residences.
Home Education Moderators must hold Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA) registration. However, this position is considered non-practising by TRBWA and will not provide enough teaching experience for a teacher to reapply for full teacher registration.
Communication and stakeholder engagement
The role requires highly developed verbal and interpersonal communication skills to build and sustain productive relationships with parents, education professionals, and external agencies. Strong written communication skills are also essential for preparing professional correspondence and reports.
Professional benefits
Working with the Department of Education includes access to competitive pay, flexible work arrangements, training and career development opportunities, and attractive leave entitlements.
Equity, diversity and inclusion
The Department is committed to a workforce that is inclusive, culturally responsive, and reflective of the diversity seen across schools and the wider Western Australian community. Applications are encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, young people, people of diverse sexualities and genders, people with disability, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
