Job description

About the School

Karratha Senior High School is a government independent public school serving students from Years 7 to 12. The school supports about 1,270 students from Karratha and nearby communities, and is known for its long-standing reputation for shaping responsible, engaged, and compassionate young people. Its learning environment includes well-kept facilities, a strong teaching team, and a broad curriculum with opportunities in music, drama, art, sport, outdoor education, and technologies.

The school’s Health and Physical Education program operates from the Karratha Leisureplex, and its connection with the City of Karratha provides additional benefits through co-location arrangements. The school is guided by four key priorities: creating conditions for learning, strengthening curriculum and teaching, building staff capability, and developing strong community partnerships.

Role Overview

This is a permanent full-time position starting as soon as possible. The Network Attendance Officer will support improved student attendance and engagement by working with school staff, students, families, and external agencies. The role focuses on helping students who may be at risk of disengaging from education, advising staff on attendance processes, and contributing to school-wide strategies that improve attendance outcomes.

You will also review attendance information, look for patterns and concerns, support reporting requirements, answer questions from parents and community members, and take part in activities that strengthen student wellbeing and engagement. Strong relationship-building, communication, and teamwork skills are important for success in this position.

Key Duties

  • Provide day-to-day operational support related to student attendance and engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, families, students, and outside agencies to address attendance concerns.
  • Help establish and maintain partnerships that support students at risk of falling out of education.
  • Guide staff on practical attendance management procedures and strategies.
  • Gather, review, and interpret attendance data to identify trends and areas requiring attention.
  • Contribute to targeted interventions that align with the school’s strategic plan.
  • Assist with attendance monitoring, follow-up, and reporting.
  • Respond professionally to enquiries from parents and community stakeholders.
  • Support initiatives that encourage positive engagement and student wellbeing.

Selection Criteria

  • Experience providing operational policy support and attendance-related guidance to network schools.
  • Understanding of current attendance issues and broader trends in education within the local context.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team and with target groups.
  • Well-developed analytical and conceptual thinking skills, including the ability to solve problems in creative and practical ways.
  • Good initiative and organisational ability, with the capacity to set priorities, meet operational needs, and achieve agreed outcomes.

Eligibility and Compliance

Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, or hold a valid visa with work rights for the full period of the appointment. Before commencing, the successful applicant must obtain a valid Working With Children Check and consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check. A current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit is also required before starting work.

Further eligibility and training details are provided in the attached Job Description Form. The department also applies a four-day breach period for this selection process.

Application Requirements

Applications are to be completed online in two stages. First, complete the application form and provide details of two work-related referees, preferably including your current line manager. Second, attach your supporting documents. These should include a 2–3 page CV outlining your employment history and relevant professional learning, along with a 3-page statement addressing the selection criteria from the Job Description Form.

Applicants are encouraged to have all attachments prepared before starting the application. Late submissions will not be considered. Technical help with the application process is available from the Department of Education’s recruitment team.
