Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Healthcare Support Worker (SHCSW) to join our team at Newton Abbot Hospital. In this role, you will support registered healthcare professionals by undertaking delegated clinical, therapeutic, and non-clinical tasks for patients. You will utilize your experience and knowledge to make informed decisions within your scope of practice, contributing to the highest achievable standard of emergency care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses/practitioners.
  • Perform delegated clinical tasks including cannulation, venepuncture, wound care, basic wound closure, plastering of limbs, ECGs, and visual acuity tests.
  • Competently take and interpret vital signs for both adults and children.
  • Undertake adult and paediatric assessments.
  • Make appropriate referrals to Adult and Child Safeguarding teams.
  • Collaborate effectively with Registered Nurses/Practitioners and the wider Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to ensure patient safety and quality of care.
  • Support and orientate new staff members to the department.
  • Contribute to service development initiatives and participate in discussions and projects that benefit the team, patients, and the department.
  • Adhere to all departmental and Trust policies and protocols to ensure a safe environment.

About the Unit

The Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) is a dynamic environment serving a diverse patient population of all ages with minor injuries and illnesses. While operating independently from the main Emergency Department, we maintain close collaborative links to ensure the local community receives high-quality care and to help alleviate pressure on the main hospital site.

Why Work With Us

Our team is enthusiastic and dedicated to fostering education, knowledge sharing, and continuous service improvement. We offer a supportive environment where you can grow your skills and contribute to a vital healthcare service.
