Position Overview

The Health Information Specialist role involves compiling and maintaining departmental statistics and supporting various administrative functions. This position works full time, 80 hours per pay period, during the day shift at Covenant Health Corporate.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Aggregate and preserve statistical data for the department and other units.
  • Support clerical and analyst staff during busy periods and cover for absences such as vacations and holidays.
  • Prepare and submit monthly birth and death reports to the Tennessee State Department of Vital Records promptly.
  • Maintain and organize microfilm records in filing cabinets and storage areas.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and assist with special projects as needed.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the Master Patient Index by handling merges, additions, deletions, and updates.
  • Provide training assistance for new employees joining the department.
  • Act as a telephone support backup within the department.
  • Participate in educational programs, workshops, and meetings to foster professional development.
  • Attend necessary committee meetings or teams as requested.
  • Execute other related tasks assigned to maintain departmental standards.
  • Consistently meet or surpass departmental quality and productivity targets.
  • Adhere strictly to hospital and departmental policies, including safety and infection control procedures.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: No specific requirement, but preference given to candidates with a high school diploma or GED. Equivalent combinations of education and work experience demonstrating capability to perform essential duties are acceptable.
  • Experience: Ideally, two years of experience in an acute care Medical Record Department is preferred.
  • Skills: Attention to detail, strong organizational abilities, capacity to work independently, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Licensure: None required.
