The Faculty of Science is one of the largest and most multifaceted faculties, comprising several schools including Aviation, Biological Earth & Environmental Science, Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Science & Engineering, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, and Psychology. The School of Aviation delivers undergraduate and postgraduate aviation programs, combined with flight training and research activities conducted at the Flying Operations Unit at Bankstown Airport.

Key School Metrics:

  • Annual budget of around $11 million
  • Approximately 11,000 flying training hours annually
  • About 60 full-time flight students
  • Approximately 2,500 hours of lectures delivered yearly

Role Overview

The Head of School acts as the central leader and coordinator for translating the University's strategic priorities into effective outcomes within the School. This leadership role oversees integrated planning, people-focused management, resource stewardship, and engagement with staff, students, and external partners to drive significant impact. Reporting to the Dean of Science, the Head of School manages academic personnel supported by a leadership team and works closely with the School Manager who handles operational functions.

Position Details:

  • Senior level appointment including superannuation and leave loading
  • Continuing academic position at Level D/E
  • Fixed term of 5 years, full-time (35 hours per week)

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and communicate a strategic vision aligned with UNSW Science 2035 Strategy and Progress for All initiatives to enhance the School’s national and international standing.
  • Engage School staff to collectively realize strategic goals.
  • Provide strategic counsel for the Faculty’s plans concerning external partnerships, research, and education.
  • Promote academic excellence by fostering innovative and high-quality teaching aligned with performance goals.
  • Recruit outstanding undergraduate, postgraduate, and lifelong learners consistent with enrolment and revenue objectives.
  • Improve research output by increasing active researchers, securing larger grants, and enhancing publication impact.
  • Develop new financially viable programs and courses with academic and Faculty collaboration to meet evolving stakeholder needs.
  • Identify and pursue collaborations with educational, research, and industry partners to facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • Expand the School’s global profile and reputation.
  • Create and maintain a collegial and productive culture within the School and with Faculty and University colleagues.
  • Attract, retain, and develop high-quality staff through effective talent and succession planning supported by communication and performance management.
  • Foster strong relationships with external stakeholders such as schools, employers, donors, alumni, community, business, and government to promote the School's interests.
  • Lead collaboration with industry and end-users to cultivate sustainable partnerships producing technological innovations.
  • Support equity, diversity, and inclusion policies, and maintain a respectful, fair workplace.
  • Set clear expectations and KPIs for the School, provide regular feedback, and facilitate career development discussions.
  • Participate actively in Faculty Executive leadership and represent the School internally and externally.
  • Manage School budgets responsibly, ensuring financial sustainability and compliance with University policies.
  • Oversee administration, resource allocation, legislative compliance, and quality assurance including Work Health and Safety adherence.
  • Lead School committees and contribute to Faculty and University governance structures.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the University's code of conduct, values, and safety policies ensuring the well-being of all.

  • Recognized academic scholar at Associate Professor or Professor level in a relevant discipline with a strong understanding of university values and the global academic context.
  • Energetic and resilient leader capable of navigating challenges in an ambitious institution.

  • Proven capacity to develop and manage strategic change to fulfill the School’s vision.

  • Effective ambassador able to represent the School at diverse forums.
  • Competent budget management skills aligned with strategic priorities.
