Role Overview

NHS England North East and North Cumbria offers an exceptional opportunity for the role of Head of School of Acute Specialties. This position reports directly to the Deputy Dean for Specialty Training and Postgraduate Dean and oversees the training and education of over 100 doctors specializing in Acute Specialties.

School Objectives

The School of Acute Specialties unites Royal College contacts, NHS England North East staff, Local Education and Training (LET) staff, and trusts to coordinate and deliver postgraduate medical education effectively across the North East and North Cumbria.

Position Details

• Anticipated start date is 1st September 2026.
• Role commitment is approximately 2 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week.
• The Head is professionally and managerially accountable to the Postgraduate Dean.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will concentrate on enhancing learner supervision, improving assessments and educational experiences, engaging faculty actively, and ensuring impactful educational results now and for the future. This evolving role includes promoting workforce transformation, fostering multiprofessional relationships, innovating curriculum delivery methods, and implementing workforce well-being strategies.

Strategic Collaboration

The Head collaborates across health and social care sectors to align education with evolving service models, nurturing a cohesive workforce drawn from various professional backgrounds.

Organizational Context

NHS England executes multiple statutory duties focused on supporting the NHS to provide excellent care, leveraging expertise in clinical, operational, commissioning, technology, data science, cybersecurity, software engineering, education, and commercial areas to supply superior NHS services.

Organizational Evolution

Following the March 2025 government announcement, NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care are set to merge functions, aiming for complete NHS England integration into the department.

Additional Information

• Current NHS employees who succeed in the interview process will undergo an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) through the Electronic Staff Record, facilitating onboarding and confirming employment details; opting out is permitted.
• Those with designated office bases are expected to spend at least 40% of their working time at the office.
• This position does not provide visa sponsorship.
