Role Overview
Reporting directly to the Executive Director and as a vital part of the Senior Leadership Team, the successful candidate will lead the media and communications division, managing a compact and effective team. The role demands oversight of strategic communications that enhance the Academy’s public profile, influence, and reputation. Responsibilities include managing media relations, leveraging engagement opportunities, curating content for traditional and digital media, and providing advisory services to senior leadership and Fellows. This position requires a hands-on approach, involving direct involvement in content creation and campaign execution in addition to strategic planning. Adeptness in quick decision-making and managing emerging issues in a dynamic environment is essential.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate possesses strong experience in media, journalism, public relations, or corporate communications with solid knowledge of the Australian media ecosystem and established media contacts. They have demonstrated success in identifying and developing media opportunities, crafting compelling stories, and delivering impactful communication strategies that enhance organizational standing. Exceptional writing, stakeholder engagement, and advisory capabilities enable the clear communication of complex subjects.
Well-connected with media, government, and sector players, the candidate is trusted to offer sound guidance to senior stakeholders. This includes managing proactive campaigns and navigating sensitive issues or sudden developments effectively. Leadership experience with proven success in building capable teams and promoting collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement is required. Commitment to inclusive, values-driven leadership that contributes to a positive workplace culture is essential. Familiarity with the science, research, educational, or not-for-profit sectors is highly advantageous.
Selection Criteria
- Comprehensive understanding of the Australian media with strong journalistic relationships and a record of impactful media coverage.
- Strategic focus in recognizing and capitalizing on media opportunities through high-quality, diverse-platform content aligned with strategic aims.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and sustain trusted relationships with media, government ministers, and other key stakeholders.
- Experience with multiple media platforms and agility in adopting new ones, including the use of data analytics to evaluate communication effectiveness.
- Leadership aptitude with a proven ability to develop high-performing teams and foster a collaborative, hands-on environment suited to a small agile group.
- Trusted collaborator within senior leadership, promoting open, respectful decision-making and strong team synergy.
- Capability to create inclusive, accessible content and communication channels that engage diverse audiences equitably and reduce participation barriers.
