Job description
Role overview
Gov Facility Services Ltd is hiring a practical, dependable Handyperson / Maintenance Operative for HMP Bullingdon, a category B men’s prison in Chesterton, England. This is a full-time post on a permanent basis, working 39 hours each week from Monday to Friday, with an annual salary of £28,087.80.
The site operates like a small city, so the facilities team plays a vital part in keeping the prison safe, secure, and running smoothly. The work supports prisoners, staff, visitors, their families, and the wider community, with a strong focus on rehabilitation, safety, and positive change.
Team environment
You will be joining a collaborative facilities maintenance team that includes trades and support staff such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners, and administrators. The culture is described as supportive, driven, inclusive, and committed to making a real difference.
What the role involves
As an Escort / Fabric Operative, you will use your practical maintenance background to support building fabric and hard facilities management work in a secure environment. The role suits someone confident with tools, comfortable working with others, and able to contribute to safe day-to-day operations.
Candidate profile
The employer is looking for someone with relevant hands-on experience and the ability to work effectively in a demanding, safety-focused setting. Experience in a prison environment would be helpful but is not essential.
Benefits
Along with the salary, the role includes 25 days of holiday per year plus Bank Holidays. Additional non-contractual benefits may include death in service cover at 4x salary, private GP consultations, an Employee Assistance Programme with counselling and support services, financial reward schemes, and retailer discounts.
The organisation also highlights a strong emphasis on health and safety, a supportive workplace, inclusion and diversity, and genuine opportunities to build skills and progress.
Diversity and inclusion
GFSL says it is committed to building a workplace where every employee feels heard, included, and able to be themselves. It aims to support different needs fairly and consistently, while encouraging ongoing learning, training, and career development.
Future plans
The company has stated that its facilities management services are expected to transfer to private sector providers after a successful procurement process, no earlier than August 2027.
Values
The organisation’s stated values are Pride in People, Do the Right Thing, and One Team.
Additional information
The company notes that it is an ISO 9001 certified organisation.
