Job description

Role overview

GFSL is hiring a Cleaning Operative for HMP Swaleside, a Category B adult male prison in Sheerness, England. This is a permanent full-time role for 39 hours per week. The position sits within the Facilities Maintenance Team, helping maintain a safe, secure, and well-run environment for prisoners, staff, visitors, and the wider community.

The working pattern is Monday to Friday. You will be joining a team made up of specialists across maintenance and support functions, all working together to support rehabilitation and positive change.

What you will do

In this role, you will help keep the prison environment clean and orderly, contributing to day-to-day safety and smooth operations. Your work will directly support the effective running of the site and the wellbeing of everyone who uses it.

About the environment

HMP Swaleside operates much like a self-contained town, requiring coordinated effort from many people to keep services functioning. As part of the facilities team, your contribution will have a meaningful impact on prison operations and on the people connected to them.

Skills and experience needed

GFSL is looking for someone with cleaning experience, a solid understanding of COSHH, awareness of relevant health and safety standards, and strong organisational, time management, and interpersonal skills.

Benefits

Salary for the role is £25,775.88. Annual leave is 25 days plus Bank Holidays. Additional non-contractual benefits include life cover at 4 times salary, access to private GP consultations, an Employee Assistance Programme with counselling and crisis support, financial reward options, and retailer discounts.

You can also expect a supportive, inclusive workplace, a strong emphasis on safety, and opportunities to develop your skills and progress in your career.

Values and culture

GFSL places strong importance on people, inclusion, and fairness. The organisation aims to create a workplace where every employee feels respected, heard, and able to bring their authentic self to work. Ongoing learning, training, and progression opportunities are part of the culture.

Future plans

GFSL has been informed by its shareholder, the Ministry of Justice, that future facilities management services will move to the private sector. Following a successful procurement process, the services are expected to transfer to private sector provider or providers no earlier than August 2027.

Organisation values

Pride in People. Do the Right Thing. One Team.
