Job description

About the Role

Gov Facility Services Ltd (GFSL) invites applications for a dedicated Handyperson / Maintenance Operative position at HMP Bullingdon, a category B men’s prison located in Chesterton, England. This role is a full-time, permanent contract spanning 39 hours per week from Monday to Friday, with an annual salary of £28,087.80. The Facilities Maintenance Team functions as the operational core of the prison, maintaining a safe and efficient environment that impacts prisoners, staff, visitors, and the broader community.

Key Responsibilities and Environment

As an Escort / Fabric Operative within this team, you will collaborate closely with skilled professionals including plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners, and administrators, all committed to fostering safety and positive outcomes within the facility. Your duties will involve maintaining the building fabric and ensuring essential maintenance tasks are completed reliably, directly contributing to a secure and supportive atmosphere.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

Applicants should ideally have experience in a prison environment, though this is desirable rather than mandatory. You must be proficient with hand and power tools and possess prior experience in a building fabric or Hard Facilities Management setting. A valid First Aid at Work certification and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths are required. Strong knowledge of health and safety protocols, along with excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, are essential.

Compensation and Benefits

GFSL offers 25 days of paid vacation annually plus bank holidays. Additional benefits include a death-in-service package valued at four times your salary, access to private GP consultations, an Employee Assistance Program providing counseling and support, various financial incentive schemes, and discounts at retail outlets.

Culture and Future Outlook

The company is committed to a workplace culture embracing diversity, inclusion, and equity, where all employees feel valued, heard, and empowered. GFSL actively promotes continuous learning, career progression, and a supportive environment. Notably, the Ministry of Justice has notified that facilities management services will transition to private sector providers by August 2027, marking future changes in service delivery.

Additional Information

  • The role operates onsite and demands full-time commitment Monday through Friday.
  • Safety standards and quality certifications such as ISO 9001 underline GFSL’s dedication to excellence.
  • The company motto emphasizes pride in people, ethics, and team unity.
