Job description

About the organisation

Barts Health is among the UK’s largest and most influential healthcare groups, supporting a diverse population of more than two million people in north east London. With five hospitals working together at scale while serving local communities, the trust has a major opportunity to improve health outcomes, narrow inequalities and influence healthcare delivery nationally.

About the role

This is a high-impact leadership position for a Group Chief Financial Officer who is motivated by public service and ready to help shape the future of healthcare. As a voting Board member, you will ensure that financial and wider organisational resources are directed toward the greatest possible benefit for patients and communities.

Working in close partnership with the Chair and Group Chief Executive, you will set and deliver a long-term financial strategy that supports excellent compassionate care, drives innovation and research, and helps the organisation adapt to the evolving needs of the population it serves.

In addition to financial leadership, this role carries executive accountability for estates, facilities and procurement across one of the NHS’s largest organisations. You will oversee major capital programmes, significant commercial partnerships and an extensive estate portfolio, making sure investment and procurement decisions create value for patients while supporting transformation, sustainability and future growth across the hospitals and the wider health system.

The position also has wider influence across London and nationally, helping shape how NHS resources are managed, how inequality is tackled, and how more integrated, preventative care is delivered. The successful candidate will bring strategic influence and a practical understanding of frontline care.

What the organisation is looking for

The trust is seeking an outstanding values-led leader who can operate confidently in a complex group environment that depends on matrix working. You will need the ambition and capability to deliver change at scale, strong financial expertise, the ability to build inclusive cultures, and the leadership presence to inspire teams. A strong commitment to equity, inclusion and improved outcomes for all is essential.

Values and culture

Barts Health aims to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals known for excellence, innovation and safe, compassionate care in east London and beyond. The organisation expects consistently strong patient safety, care delivered in the right place at the right time, and a workplace where the WeCare values are visible in everyday behaviour.

The trust is committed to inclusion and belonging, values difference, and actively supports an inclusive working environment. Applications are particularly encouraged from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates, as they are currently underrepresented at this band within Barts Health.
