Job description
About the Company
Our client is a prominent global markets and commodities bank, headquartered in Europe with multiple international branches. The bank focuses on commodities such as base metals, precious metals, and energy, alongside fixed income, currencies, and emerging markets, serving a broad institutional clientele through a streamlined, tightly-knit operation based in Singapore. The Singapore office comprises an Asia Compliance team of four members, including this role, collaborating closely with the Group Compliance team at headquarters. The primary compliance operations are centralized in London, while the Singapore team contributes advisory and assurance services. The role supports hybrid working arrangements, typically four days in-office with some flexibility, shifting to 4-5 days at the start for onboarding. Night calls are rare, and there is occasional international travel, such as about once yearly to Shanghai.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the main Compliance adviser and regulatory subject matter expert for the Asia Fixed Income & Currencies (FIC) desk, with additional responsibilities covering commodities in metals and energy sectors.
- Provide on-the-spot regulatory and sanctions guidance during Asian trading hours, aiding in pricing, counterparty assessment, and risk decisions.
- Lead compliance involvement for new products, strategic business projects, and critical transactions, particularly supporting growth initiatives in Asia FIC, RMB/EM/G10 FX, and commodity-related activities.
- Assist the business in establishing and maintaining effective front-line controls and risk management methods.
- Guide the interpretation and practical execution of regulatory changes, including best execution, market abuse, and trade reporting.
- Conduct ongoing desk-level oversight of trading conduct, monitor activities, and ensure business controls are effective, escalating issues relating to conduct, regulatory compliance, and financial crime concerns when needed.
- Act as the primary compliance and sanctions contact during Asian business hours and facilitate escalations to London’s central surveillance and control teams.
- Manage representative licensing, RNF, and notifications related to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) regulations.
- Provide targeted compliance training to Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities teams.
- Support regulatory audits, thematic reviews, and examination processes as the main desk-related compliance expert.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A minimum of 12 years’ experience within regulatory compliance, specifically in investment banking or global markets environments.
- In-depth knowledge of commodities trading, investment banking products, and their regulatory frameworks.
- Strong technical expertise with the capability to function autonomously as a senior contributor.
- A relevant degree is mandatory; legal qualifications present an added advantage.
- Experience or familiarity with audit processes, either internal or external, is highly desirable.
- Ideal candidates come from large banking institutions; commodities background is preferred but not necessary, given the focus on commodities advisory and openness to candidates expanding beyond FIC advisory work.
- Proficiency in Mandarin is advantageous for communication with the Shanghai branch.
- Must demonstrate resilience, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage complexity and ambiguity effectively.
Additional Information
- The role entails hybrid work in Singapore with roughly four days per week onsite, increasing at the start.
- Minimal night shifts, with infrequent travel to Shanghai, approximately once annually.
