Gas Locate Technician

Role overview

USIC is hiring a Gas Locate Technician for its Advanced Gas Operations team in Tyler, TX. This is a long-term, field-based opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, values safety, and prefers independent, hands-on work. There is no prior locating experience required for this position. New hires receive full training, and candidates with related industry experience may be considered when setting starting pay. Technicians work from a company-provided vehicle and use ticketing and claims systems to complete clear and accurate mark-outs for excavators and property owners.

Compensation

The role pays $20.00 per hour.

Key duties

As a locator, you will spend your day in the field identifying gas lines within assigned areas and marking utility locations to help prevent damage. Depending on the assignment, you may also locate other utilities in addition to gas lines. The work may involve some hand digging to expose gas lines when needed.

You will also build working knowledge of underground utility systems and follow company, client, state, and federal damage-prevention rules at all times. The job is performed during the day and is full time, but it also includes overtime, weekend work, and on-call coverage, including nights and holidays, based on business needs.

Work schedule and conditions

This position is based outdoors and requires comfort working in changing weather conditions. Technicians must be willing to work overtime, weekends, and on-call shifts as needed. Local daytime travel is required, and some trips outside the area or overnight may also be expected.

This is a safety-sensitive role, so passing a drug screen is required. Applicants must also have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.

Requirements

Candidates should be able to stand and walk for long periods across different types of terrain, bend and stoop, and lift items weighing up to 75 lbs. They must be able to distinguish colors used for wiring and underground markings, use technology effectively, read and interpret locate tickets, maps, and prints, and apply basic math to calculate distances.

Strong communication skills are important for working with colleagues, customers, contractors, and homeowners. Customer service experience is helpful but not mandatory.
