Role Overview

We seek empathetic and insightful individuals to join as Freelance Critical Friends — trusted advisors who provide honest, constructive feedback to empower programme participants in their entrepreneurial and leadership development. This role is project-based and flexible, reporting directly to the Programmes Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct personalized one-on-one mentoring sessions with participants, guiding them in refining action plans and problem-solving.
  • Engage actively in cohort training to understand participant goals and challenges and assist in preparing participants for crucial programme milestones.
  • Facilitate connections to valuable resources, tools, and networks to support participant growth.
  • Collaborate with programme teams through regular reflective meetings, adapting support to evolving participant needs.
  • Contribute detailed feedback for monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) to measure participant progress.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proven success in mentoring or coaching within professional, entrepreneurial, or social impact settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish trust and a supportive environment for diverse participants.
  • Ability to deliver constructive and actionable feedback promoting self-reflection and confidence.
  • Understanding of challenges faced by grassroots organizations, social enterprises, and early-stage changemakers.
  • Dedication to equity, inclusion, and strengths-based capacity building.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience supporting marginalized or underrepresented groups.
  • Familiarity with social enterprise and nonprofit sector challenges and opportunities.
  • Background in coaching, advisory, or leadership roles related to startups or social innovation.
  • Knowledge of monitoring, evaluation, and learning frameworks.
  • Participation in professional development or leadership programmes.

Compensation and Work Conditions

This freelance role offers a fee of £350 to £600 per day, dependent on experience. The position is primarily remote, with occasional in-person engagements.

Additional Information

This position operates strictly as an independent contractor outside the scope of IR35 regulations. The contractor will not receive employment benefits or rights and is responsible for their own taxes and compliance. The working relationship is service-based with no direct control over how tasks are completed, beyond agreed-upon outcomes and contract terms.
