Job description

Position Overview

The St. Lawrence Parks Commission is seeking a Manual Worker to support the Fort Fright event at Fort Henry National Historic Site. This group 1 temporary role runs from August 3, 2026, to November 13, 2026, with up to 36.25 variable hours per week. The role is based in Kingston and requires onsite work.

Core Responsibilities

  • Execute various manual labor duties to aid Fort Henry’s special event operations.
  • Collaborate with the Events Team to build and assemble event sets and scenes utilizing carpentry and woodworking skills tailored for Fort Fright.
  • Maintain and restore the appearance of set pieces and props.
  • Apply painting and finishing techniques using diverse materials to craft immersive, spooky environments suitable for the Fort Fright experience.
  • Work closely with the creative team to bring artistic concepts to fruition.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed during set construction to maintain a secure working environment.
  • Operate efficiently to meet event deadlines and upkeep sets to support Fort Fright’s success.
  • Work outdoors under variable weather conditions.
  • Adhere to the Commission’s equity, diversity, and inclusion values in interactions with staff and visitors.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven experience in carpentry, decorative painting, and related manual tasks.
  • Competent in handling various hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to perform maintenance and repairs on event sets and displays.
  • Knowledge of Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act and compliance with safety regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Strong communication skills to engage with staff, public, and contractors professionally; ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Teamwork and leadership capabilities, including working independently or collaboratively, problem-solving creatively, and supervising small teams where needed.
  • Physical stamina to perform demanding construction tasks, including lifting and carrying loads up to 50 pounds, and working in varied weather conditions.

Additional Information and Terms

This temporary position is scheduled for a fixed duration from early August to mid-November 2026. The hourly wage ranges between $22.86 and $24.66. The work schedule is variable with a maximum of 36.25 hours per week. Candidates must be prepared for outdoor work in different climatic conditions and possess the physical capability required for this role.
