Job description

Role overview

Serco is hiring a Field Officer for its Electronic Monitoring team in Chelmsford. This is a hands-on public service role where you will visit people at home, fit monitoring equipment, and help them understand the process in a calm, reassuring way. The work is varied and meaningful, with a direct impact on individuals, communities, and the wider justice system.

Working pattern

The position is based in Chelmsford and runs on night shifts from 5:00 pm to 1:00 am. The role is contracted at 37.5 hours per week and follows a rolling rota that includes weekends and bank holidays. Work is carried out all year round, and the rota is issued roughly 10 weeks in advance. Flexibility is important, as some shifts may begin earlier or end later depending on operational needs.

Because of the nature of the work and the operational setup, applicants must live within the CM postcode area.

What you will do

You will travel to individuals’ homes to install electronic tagging equipment, working independently or with a Monitoring Support Officer. A key part of the job is building trust, communicating clearly, and helping people feel safe and supported while also maintaining confidence in the justice process. The role contributes to easing pressure on the prison system by supporting successful monitoring cases and helping people remain connected to their communities.

Training and support

No prior background in this specific field is required. Serco will provide a two-week induction training programme, followed by shadowing and guidance from experienced colleagues. The role is suited to people who are caring, compassionate, resilient, and motivated to make a positive difference.

Pay and benefits

  • Annual salary of £30,702, including a £3,500 London weighting allowance
  • Company car with personal use included
  • Pension scheme with employer matching up to 6%
  • Life insurance
  • 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Ongoing training and development support
  • Access to wellbeing support such as Employee Assistance Programme, MIND, Simply Health Care, and dental plans
  • Discounts and special offers across attractions, mobile phones, cinema, leisure, retail, and hospitality
  • Supportive team culture with a strong focus on diversity and inclusion

Checks and other requirements

This role requires BPSS and Standard DBS clearance. The checks include identity verification, employment history checks, and a Standard DBS search covering spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. An Occupational Health Questionnaire will also need to be completed so appropriate wellbeing support can be arranged and your ability to carry out the role can be assessed.

There are genuine occupational requirements and contractual obligations for this position. In line with the Equality Act 2010, applications from female candidates are especially encouraged. Some applications may be put on hold during the review process to ensure these requirements are met.

About Serco

Serco delivers essential public services across areas such as defence, transport, justice, immigration, healthcare, and citizen services. The organisation places strong emphasis on inclusion, belonging, and employee networks that support gender, multicultural, disability, and LGBT+ communities. Serco also states that reasonable adjustments can be made during interview and employment, and it welcomes discussion around flexible working.

Application note

Candidates are encouraged to apply promptly, as the closing date may be brought forward if a large number of applications is received.
