Job description
Position Overview
This temporary full-time role is available from the date of appointment until 19th February 2027, with the potential for extension. The Family Lawyer will play a vital role within Legal Aid Queensland by representing clients and advocating in matters related to family law, domestic and family violence, child protection, and associated areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare cases, instruct counsel, and personally advocate for clients in family law, domestic and family violence, and child protection proceedings.
- Deliver duty lawyer services including providing legal advice, information, and referrals.
- Where applicable, act as an Independent Children's Lawyer or Separate Representative, advocating for the child's best interests in family law and child protection cases.
- Assist and advise team members and other staff on family law and related inquiries.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, ensuring effective self-management.
- Contribute to submissions supporting policy, law reform, procedures, and enhancing legal service delivery.
- Develop and maintain networks with external stakeholders and assist in organizing legal training and informational sessions.
- Participate in team planning and propose improvements to operational workflows.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in independently preparing and advocating in family law, domestic and family violence, and child protection matters.
- Strong understanding of relevant legal practices, procedures and adherence to ethical standards.
- Excellent communication skills; able to engage stakeholders including clients with complex needs using trauma-informed approaches.
