Job overview
The Executive Director of Project Management is the most senior project leadership role in the organization. This position owns enterprise-level project and program delivery and heads the Project Management Office (PMO), making sure strategic priorities are turned into results that are delivered on schedule, within scope, and in line with business goals.
In this role, you will serve as the connection point between strategy and execution by organizing resources, governance, and delivery methods to improve project success, operational effectiveness, and overall business impact.
Key responsibilities
- Create and roll out company-wide project management strategies, operating frameworks, and governance structures.
- Align the project portfolio with business strategy and organizational priorities.
- Work closely with senior leaders to convert strategic goals into executable programs and projects.
- Ensure project delivery is consistent across all business units.
- Own the planning, sequencing, and execution of the full project portfolio.
- Manage resource allocation across multiple programs and initiatives.
- Track schedules, budgets, scope, and deliverables to keep projects on course.
- Provide leadership with timely updates and strategic insights on project performance.
- Set up and lead the PMO to standardize tools, processes, and best practices.
- Introduce and manage delivery approaches such as Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid models.
- Strengthen governance, reporting, and documentation standards.
- Continuously raise PMO maturity and project delivery capability across the organization.
- Identify, evaluate, and reduce risks across the project portfolio.
- Build quality assurance practices so deliverables meet required standards.
- Run project audits, reviews, and post-launch evaluations.
- Support compliance with internal procedures and external regulations.
- Define and monitor project performance indicators such as on-time delivery, budget control, resource use, and ROI.
- Develop dashboards and reporting tools for real-time project visibility.
- Use data to improve execution efficiency and results.
- Review project outcomes to identify lessons learned and best practices.
- Partner with product, operations, technology, finance, and HR teams to keep work aligned and moving.
- Create effective cross-functional communication and coordination channels.
- Remove blockers and improve organizational agility.
- Lead and develop strong project management teams and foster accountability and high performance.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree or higher in Business Administration, Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline is required. An MBA or similar advanced degree is preferred, and PMP or an equivalent certification is strongly preferred.
The role calls for typically 18+ years of experience in project or program management, including 8+ years in senior leadership positions. Experience with large, complex, cross-functional initiatives is essential, along with a track record of building or leading PMO functions. Prior work in multinational companies or large enterprises is preferred.
