About the Role

The Executive Director of Media Relations will lead strategic media efforts for the UT System, managing both proactive and reactive communications to advance the organization's mission. This leadership role demands thoughtful media engagement and consistent messaging aligned with the university system's objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop timely, accurate, and proactive communications addressing issues, opportunities, and media inquiries.
  • Create and share content regularly to inform state, national, and trade media.
  • Write diverse communications materials including statements, news releases, briefings, op-eds, and media pitches, while handling message review processes.
  • Oversee communications coordination alongside social media management for multi-channel delivery.
  • Collaborate with communications teams across UT institutions to relay important updates promptly.
  • Prepare media briefings with necessary logistics, talking points, and reference documents to support media engagements.
  • Pitch and author opinion pieces for UT System leadership on pivotal topics.
  • Provide media relations for UT System Board of Regents and UTIMCO meetings.
  • Act as the media liaison for UT System departments and institutions.
  • Support media opportunities at UT System events.
  • Maintain and update media contact lists through proactive outreach and press analysis.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.
  • At least 10 years of senior experience in public relations, corporate communications, journalism, or a related area, preferably in higher education, health, or non-profit sectors.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and content creation abilities targeting diverse audiences and media.
  • Deep understanding of digital media, news judgment, and the media landscape at regional and national levels.
  • Proven track record generating earned media coverage in multiple publication types.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills for communications professionals.
  • Capacity to manage complex issues involving multiple stakeholders with integrity and discretion.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and function both independently and collaboratively.

Working Conditions

  • Standard office setting with repetitive keyboard use and standard equipment.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work required.

Additional Information

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • 40 hours per week.
  • Mandatory participation in either Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) or Optional Retirement Program (ORP) depending on eligibility.
  • Background checks required for finalists, including verification of criminal, employment, education, and motor vehicle records.
