Job description
Role and Facility Overview
West Coast General Hospital is recruiting Emergency Medicine Physicians for both part-time and full-time work. The hospital, opened in 2001, has 52 acute care beds and a 3-bed ICU. It is a contemporary facility with an attractive indoor atrium.
Hospital Services and Clinical Support
The site provides a 24-hour emergency department along with ambulatory care, acute medical/surgical services, psychiatry, cardiopulmonary services, diabetes education, laboratory testing, medical imaging with CT scanner, nutrition counselling, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, social work, and physiotherapy. Specialist coverage includes anesthesiology, general surgery, urology, geriatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and radiology, with PACS imaging support.
Work Arrangement and Academic Links
The physician selected for this role may also have the opportunity to take on a limited number of shifts at the regional Emergency Department in Nanaimo. Academic connections are available through University of British Columbia postgraduate programs and the Island Medical School undergraduate programs.
Community Information
Port Alberni is a coastal community in the Alberni Valley with a population of about 18,000. The area offers year-round outdoor recreation, temperate weather, access to Tofino, Ucluelet, Long Beach, and Mount Washington, and is known for fishing and other sports. It is also described as family-friendly, with affordable housing, strong public schools, and many activities for children. Sproat Lake is nearby, and the city is about a 60-minute drive from Nanaimo with convenient access to Vancouver and Victoria.
Eligibility and Registration
CPSBC USA certified registration is accepted for this opportunity.
Compensation and Incentives
This position is compensated on a fee-for-service basis. Under the Rural Subsidiary Agreement, the role may qualify for extra financial support, including a 7.98% retention premium, a retention flat fee of $12,367, relocation assistance of up to $15,000, and a recruitment incentive of up to $10,000. Continuing medical education support is also available at $2,200 per year in years 3 to 4, and $4,400 per year after 4 years in the community.

The role is intended to begin as soon as possible.
