Job description
Role overview
The Ministry of Justice in New Zealand is hiring a permanent full-time District Court Scheduler to support the Manukau District Court, with coverage across South Auckland courts including Manukau, Papakura, and Pukekohe. This position suits someone who enjoys working in a busy environment, solving complex scheduling challenges, and contributing to the efficient delivery of justice.
In this role, you will be central to day-to-day court scheduling activity. You will help keep hearings moving, make practical decisions that support court operations, and work with a broad range of people across the justice system.
Why this role is important
Court scheduling plays a key part in making sure hearings are listed and run smoothly for everyone involved, including victims, defendants, families, lawyers, Police, and the Judiciary. This role helps keep court activity organised, efficient, and on time.
Key responsibilities
- Apply a consistent and effective approach to scheduling matters across the JSA.
- Set hearing priorities in line with Ministry of Justice focus areas.
- Assist with reporting on scheduling activity and performance priorities.
- Ensure the right amount and mix of work is scheduled.
- Improve courtroom utilisation and allocation of judicial resources.
- Encourage standard scheduling practices and effective use of technology.
- Stay current with court facilities and scheduling factors for each location.
- Develop strong working relationships with judiciary members, registry teams, and other stakeholders across multiple courts.
Skills and experience
To be successful, you should bring strong organisation, sound judgement, and the ability to stay calm when workload and pressure are high. This role also requires confident communication, a collaborative style, and comfort working with data, systems, and technology.
A proactive, improvement-oriented mindset is important, along with the ability to influence others and help solve issues rather than only identify them. Previous court process experience is helpful, but it is not required.
What you can expect
This is a meaningful role where your work supports access to justice every day. You will join a supportive team, build specialist capability, and work closely with the Judiciary and leaders in the justice sector. The work is varied and fast-paced, with no two days the same.
About the employer
Te Tāhū o te Ture, the Ministry of Justice, is focused on strengthening public trust in the law of Aotearoa New Zealand. The organisation values diversity and supports people of all gender identities, ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, disabilities, and religions.
Benefits
- 4.4 weeks of annual leave
- Flexible working hours where possible
- Access to an online professional development portal
- Access to inclusive and proactive employee networks
Salary
The pay range for this position is NZD 67,066 to NZD 90,008 per year. Final pay will depend on your skills and experience.
