About the Role
The City of Nanaimo is seeking a visionary and collaborative leader to serve as Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture. This senior leadership position involves guiding the strategic and operational aspects of a comprehensive portfolio including parks operations and planning, recreation and wellness services, cultural and sporting programs, facilities, events, and stewardship of diverse natural areas such as parks, trails, and open spaces within the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction and operational oversight through a team of managers for the delivery of services aligned with Council priorities and community needs.
- Lead a sizeable workforce composed of unionized and exempt employees to ensure effective service provision.
- Foster community engagement and develop partnerships supporting arts, culture, and heritage initiatives.
- Manage operating and capital budgets responsibly.
- Promote an organizational culture centered on collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Degree in Recreation or Resource Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- At least eight years of progressively responsible experience including senior leadership roles within a public sector unionized environment.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is mandatory.
Salary and Work Details
This is a permanent full-time exempt position with a 35-hour workweek. The salary range is from $161,427 to $171,731 annually, complemented by a competitive benefits package.
