Position Overview

We seek a Director of Safety and Security to lead the School Security division at a client location in Washington, D.C. This role supports the district’s objective to ensure a secure and safe environment for all students, staff, and school property, fostering a space conducive to learning and growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assume Incident Command during all emergency situations.
  • Act as the school's primary liaison with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency management entities.
  • Maintain on-call availability 24/7 to manage and respond to safety or security incidents, including weather emergencies.
  • Oversee and manage a team of up to 10 Campus Safety Officers.
  • Serve as the campus authority on security matters, staying informed on best practices concerning crime and safety.
  • Develop and enforce department policies compliant with federal and state laws, school board directives, and contractual obligations.
  • Lead investigations into criminal and internal incidents.
  • Coordinate and conduct required school safety drills such as lockdowns, evacuations, and severe weather responses.
  • Exemplify high ethical and professional standards in interactions with students, parents, staff, and external agencies.
  • Advise on safety features related to school construction and renovation projects.
  • Manage the Safety and Security budget collaboratively with school administration to maximize resource efficiency.
  • Support threat assessment processes involving students, faculty, and staff.
  • Oversee security operations including entry/exit control, weapons abatement, screening procedures, and enforcement of no-trespass policies.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant federal, state, school board, and contractual guidelines.
  • Perform additional tasks as delegated by the National Director of Security or their representative.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years in supervisory roles involving staff assignment, management, and evaluation.
  • At least three years of experience in administrative roles and program development, ideally within an educational setting.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in safety and/or security, including expertise in managing security technology systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline; can substitute up to two years of degree requirement with equivalent experience.
  • Capacity to function effectively in high-pressure environments with tight deadlines.
  • Strong independent work skills paired with sound judgment and multitasking ability.
  • Proficient in planning and delivering training and presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal tact, integrity, and professional demeanor.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Preparedness for rapid emergency response, including crisis and severe weather events.
  • Experienced in the operation and management of access control, video surveillance, and visitor management systems.
