Role Overview

The Director of Retail will guide the resort’s entire retail function at Sundance Mountain Resort. This leadership role is accountable for shaping retail direction, improving revenue, coaching outlet leaders, setting merchandising standards, managing inventory centrally, growing online sales, and keeping every retail touchpoint aligned with the resort’s brand identity.

The role is also responsible for building clear systems, workflows, and success measures that strengthen efficiency, profitability, guest satisfaction, and team capability while preserving the distinct character of each retail location.

Strategic Leadership and Business Planning

  • Create and implement the annual retail strategy across every outlet.
  • Build and update business plans for individual retail locations.
  • Lead the retail leadership group and align outlet leaders on merchandising, inventory, purchasing, product development, operating standards, and financial results.
  • Own retail budget planning, forecasting, and profit-and-loss review.
  • Define key performance indicators, reporting metrics, and dashboard tools to track results.
  • Study sales patterns, inventory productivity, labor efficiency, and margin performance across the retail portfolio.
  • Oversee retail technology, reporting platforms, and operational systems.
  • Manage vendor partnerships, buying approaches, and contract discussions.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs and operating playbooks for retail teams.
  • Keep the retail brand consistent across all locations.
  • Spot new retail concepts, product lines, and revenue opportunities.
  • Partner with Sales & Catering on special retail packages.
  • Work with Marketing to ensure retail compliance with TLA requirements throughout the resort.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Direct, coach, and grow outlet managers and the broader retail leadership team.
  • Set clear expectations and accountability standards for performance.
  • Hold regular one-on-ones, coaching discussions, and performance reviews.
  • Support succession planning and long-term career growth.
  • Design development programs for retail managers and supervisors.
  • Encourage strong coordination between retail areas and other resort departments.
  • Promote a guest-first, accountable, innovative, and improvement-focused culture.
  • Maintain consistent communication and alignment across retail operations.
  • Provide direct oversight to the General Store Manager, Mountain Outfitters Manager, Retail Inventory Supervisor, and Retail Merchandising Supervisor.
  • Support departmental retail areas including Deli Retail, Lookout Retail, Bearclaw Retail, Owl Bar Retail, Nordic Retail, Spa Retail, ZipTour Retail, Stables Retail, and Art Studio Retail.

Merchandising and Inventory Management

  • Design and roll out a resort-wide merchandising approach.
  • Set visual standards, merchandising guidelines, and seasonal product plans.
  • Oversee assortment planning, category management, and product lifecycle decisions.
  • Lead buying strategy and vendor selection for retail goods.
  • Support product development and private-label merchandise opportunities.
  • Maintain merchandising timelines and seasonal launch schedules.
  • Run centralized inventory management across all retail outlets.
  • Review and apply inventory systems, controls, and best practices.
  • Track stock levels, movement, transfers, and replenishment plans.
  • Build inventory forecasting models based on sales trends and seasonal demand.
  • Set standards for warehouse and storage organization.
  • Coordinate inventory transfers and balancing between departments.
  • Improve processes for receiving, reconciliation, and inventory accuracy.
  • Identify opportunities for centralized purchasing and volume savings.
  • Manage resort uniform purchasing and distribution programs.

E-Commerce and Online Store Leadership

  • Build and execute the resort’s e-commerce plan.
  • Oversee Shopify and other digital retail platforms.
  • Monitor online sales results and the customer journey.
  • Keep product listings, pricing, stock status, and digital merchandising current.
  • Coordinate launches across in-person and online channels.
  • Develop merchandise that is exclusive to the online store.
  • Work with Marketing to support digital campaigns and promotions.
  • Improve product presentation, website merchandising, photography, and content quality.
  • Oversee fulfillment, shipping, and online order customer support.
  • Review e-commerce metrics and improve conversion performance.
  • Ensure inventory stays synchronized between digital and physical stores.
