Job description

Role Overview

The Director of Retail will provide high-level direction for every retail operation across Sundance Mountain Resort. This role is accountable for shaping retail strategy, improving sales results, guiding outlet managers, setting merchandising expectations, managing inventory centrally, growing e-commerce activity, and keeping all retail outlets aligned with the resort’s brand.

The position also builds the systems, workflows, and performance measures needed to increase productivity, strengthen profitability, elevate guest satisfaction, and support team growth while preserving the distinct character of each retail outlet.

Strategic Leadership and Business Planning

  • Set and implement the annual business direction for all resort retail locations.
  • Build and update business plans for each retail outlet.
  • Guide the Retail Leadership Team so outlet leaders stay aligned on merchandising, inventory, buying approach, product development, operating standards, and financial outcomes.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and P&L review activities for retail.
  • Define KPIs, performance dashboards, and reporting tools to track retail results.
  • Review sales patterns, inventory performance, labor efficiency, and profitability across retail departments.
  • Oversee retail technology platforms, reporting tools, and operational systems.
  • Manage vendor partnerships, sourcing strategy, and contract discussions.
  • Create and maintain SOPs and operational playbooks for retail.
  • Keep brand presentation consistent across every retail location.
  • Assess new retail concepts, product lines, and revenue opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Sales & Catering on distinctive retail packages.
  • Work with Marketing to ensure retail follows TLA requirements throughout the resort.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Coach, guide, and develop outlet managers and the broader retail leadership group.
  • Set clear expectations and hold teams accountable for results.
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, coaching conversations, and performance evaluations.
  • Build succession plans and growth paths for team members.
  • Design leadership development initiatives for retail managers and supervisors.
  • Encourage strong cooperation between retail outlets and other resort departments.
  • Support a culture centered on guest-first service, accountability, innovation, and ongoing improvement.
  • Maintain clear communication and alignment across all retail operations.

Direct and Supported Areas

Direct oversight includes the General Store Manager, Mountain Outfitters Manager, Retail Inventory Supervisor, and Retail Merchandising Supervisor.

Departmental support extends to Deli Retail, Lookout Retail, Bearclaw Retail, Owl Bar Retail, Nordic Retail, Spa Retail, ZipTour Retail, Stables Retail, and Art Studio Retail.

Merchandising and Central Inventory Management

  • Create and roll out a resort-wide merchandising strategy.
  • Set merchandising standards, visual direction, and seasonal product plans.
  • Manage assortment planning, category planning, and product lifecycle decisions.
  • Lead retail buying decisions and vendor selection.
  • Develop product ideas and private-label merchandise opportunities.
  • Maintain merchandising calendars and seasonal launch schedules.
  • Oversee centralized inventory control across all outlets.
  • Assess and put in place inventory systems, controls, and proven best practices.
  • Track inventory levels, product movement, transfers, and replenishment methods.
  • Build inventory forecasting models from sales trends and seasonal demand.
  • Set standards for warehouse and storage organization.
  • Coordinate inventory transfers and balancing across departments.
  • Improve processes for receiving, reconciliation, and inventory accuracy.
  • Look for opportunities to centralize purchasing and secure volume discounts.
  • Handle resort uniform purchasing and distribution programs.

E-Commerce Ownership

  • Develop and deliver the resort’s online retail strategy.
  • Manage Shopify and other digital retail platforms.
  • Track online sales performance and customer experience.
  • Keep product listings, pricing, inventory status, and online merchandising current.
  • Coordinate product releases across in-store and digital channels.
  • Create opportunities for online-only merchandise.
  • Partner with Marketing on digital sales campaigns and promotions.
  • Improve website merchandising, product photography, and content quality.
  • Oversee order fulfillment, shipping, and customer service for online purchases.
  • Review e-commerce metrics and work to improve conversion rates.
  • Ensure inventory levels stay synchronized between online and physical outlets.
