Position Summary

The Director of Internal Controls is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and refining the internal control systems across the organization to safeguard financial integrity, ensure compliance with regulations, and boost operational efficiency. This role collaborates extensively with key departments including Finance, IT, Legal, HR, and operational leadership to identify risks, enhance controls, facilitate audits, and encourage a culture of responsibility throughout all approximately 2,000 personnel.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the internal control framework covering company-wide processes and IT-dependent controls.
  • Create, document, and routinely update control policies, procedures, and narratives for finance, operations, and related functions ensuring they are practical and adaptable.
  • Lead enterprise-wide risk assessments involving financial, operational, IT, and compliance areas, identifying control gaps and coordinating remediation.
  • Evaluate risks from new systems, business changes, acquisitions, and integrations.
  • Act as the primary liaison for external auditors and third-party reviewers regarding internal controls, managing walkthroughs, control testing, and responses.
  • Track and ensure timely resolution of audit findings and control deficiencies.
  • Support various audits including governance, lender, regulatory, and contractual requirements, along with M&A integration efforts focused on risk and controls stabilization.
  • Oversee continuous control monitoring through management self-assessments and targeted testing.
  • Develop dashboards and reports for CFO and leadership to monitor control environment health.
  • Drive initiatives to simplify, standardize, and automate controls, reducing manual efforts and fatigue.
  • Utilize data analytics to detect trends and anomalies, building continuous monitoring tools.
  • Collaborate with IT to assess and promote system-based and automated controls, focusing on access, change management, data integrity, and integration points.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on risk management, providing training to control owners and fostering a culture emphasizing accountability and continuous improvements.
  • Employ change management techniques to influence leadership and ensure practical control implementation respecting business realities.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
  • Over 10 years of progressive experience in internal controls, auditing, accounting or risk management.
  • Solid knowledge of internal control concepts and risk-focused control design.
  • Experience supporting external audits and third-party reviews.
  • Proven ability to work efficiently within complex, multi-location operational organizations.
  • Successful completion of background screening and drug testing is mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as CPA, CIA, or CISA are advantageous.
  • Experience with ERP or enterprise systems like PBS, Excede, or similar automotive/trucking software.
  • Background in private, private equity-backed, or family-owned businesses.
  • Demonstrated collaboration with IT and operations for control automation.
