Role overview

Erie 1 BOCES is seeking a Director of Health, Physical Education & Athletics to lead and coordinate the district’s health, PE, and interscholastic athletics programs in Lackawanna, NY. This annual contract position is full time and begins pending Board of Education action.

Qualifications

  • You must hold a current New York State School District Administrator certificate (SDA or SDL).
  • A New York State teaching certificate in Physical Education is required; Health certification is a plus.
  • You should bring at least 3 years of successful teaching experience in physical education and/or health.
  • Previous supervisory experience of 2 years or more is preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with New York State physical education and health standards, including how they connect to K-12 curriculum, is expected.
  • Experience with interscholastic athletics, such as coaching, athletic program administration, and coach supervision, is preferred.

Reporting and supervision

  • This role oversees physical education teachers, health education teachers, school nurses, interscholastic coaches, the faculty manager, the administrative assistant, and the athletic trainer.
  • Although teaching and nursing staff formally report to the building principal, the director works collaboratively with principals on supervision matters.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Ensure district health and physical education programs follow applicable laws, Commissioner’s Regulations, and Board policies, including Title IX requirements.
  • Lead curriculum development, revision, and evaluation to support the physical, mental, and emotional growth of students.
  • Create a system to monitor student-athlete academic progress and help students stay on track toward their educational goals, in partnership with building principals.
  • Oversee the planning, administration, and tracking of budgets for interscholastic sports and intramurals.
  • Support the hiring process for health and physical education staff and district nurses, including recruiting, screening, training, assignment, and evaluation.
  • Supervise the selection and performance review of assigned staff in line with district procedures and current job descriptions.
  • Coordinate all interscholastic contests, scrimmages, and practices, including arrangements for facilities, equipment, transportation, officials, and support staff.
  • Organize pre-season physical exam scheduling for athletes and manage all parts of the Athletic Placement Process.
  • Oversee the purchase, cleaning, maintenance, and reconditioning of athletic equipment.
  • Provide equipment and supplies to head coaches and maintain a reliable inventory and accountability system.
  • Work with the payroll office to ensure coaches, support staff, and officials are paid correctly and on time.
  • Plan training sessions for teachers, support staff, and coaches on first aid, coaching certification, lifesaving, and similar topics so certifications remain current.
  • Act as the communication link between coaching staff and transportation/buildings and grounds supervisors, as well as principals.
  • Direct the planning and execution of intramural programs.
  • Partner with administrators, teachers, and support staff to build an effective professional development program.
  • Serve as a bridge between the school and the community by explaining school programs and encouraging participation.
  • Set expectations for student behavior and help maintain discipline standards.
  • Stay current on trends, legal updates, court decisions, and Board regulations affecting health, physical education, and athletics.
  • Represent the district at home contests, and attend away contests when directed by the Superintendent.
  • Attend ECIC, Section VI, and other athletic meetings as the district’s representative.
  • Keep the Superintendent, staff, and Board members informed about student activities, concerns, and accomplishments.
  • Remain visible and approachable to students and staff.
  • Roll out training on blood-borne pathogens, AED emergency procedures, concussion management, and related topics.
  • Chair the District Safety Committee and the District Health & Wellness Committee.
  • Carry out additional tasks assigned by the Superintendent.
