Director of Compliance

Role overview

The Director of Compliance supports the Chief Compliance Officer and Deputy Chief Compliance Officer by bringing deep knowledge of the affiliate’s products, services, and the billing rules that apply to government payers. This role leads audit activity for the affiliate, evaluates findings, and helps shape the compliance work plan for Johns Hopkins Health System. The position reports directly to the Johns Hopkins Health System Chief Compliance Officer.

Core responsibilities

This leader independently evaluates complex compliance risk areas, plans the department’s audit agenda, and carries out scheduled audits as well as unplanned investigations. The role requires sound judgment when determining corrective actions for non-compliance and ensuring those actions are completed by the affiliate.

The Director also monitors regulatory inquiries and requests, represents the Compliance Department on committees when needed, and shares audit outcomes with affiliate leadership while tracking any broader operational changes that follow.

In addition, the position provides ongoing guidance to staff, supervisors, and executive leaders on compliance-related topics. It includes independent research into Medicare, Medicaid, and other legal authorities tied to billing and regulatory compliance, along with the creation of education and training programs based on identified needs.

The role also oversees audits performed by vendors and payers, prepares status updates for senior management, reviews draft work from peers, and supports the mentoring and development of compliance team members.

Further duties include supervising audits of medical and billing/reimbursement records to confirm accuracy and alignment with Health System policies, government rules, and third-party payer agreements. The Director prepares written reports, highlights improvement opportunities, recommends corrective measures, and helps identify compliance risks while supporting new policies and staff training initiatives.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Clinical, or another healthcare-related field is required. A master’s degree is preferred.

Professional certifications such as CPC, CHC, CCS, RHIA, or RHIT are preferred.

The role calls for at least 10 years of relevant healthcare experience, including leadership experience in mid- to upper-level management. Experience with a range of services in an academic health system is preferred, along with a background in designing, implementing, and managing projects.
