Job description
Overview
Google is looking for a Director of Communications to lead the Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) communications function from Sydney. This senior role is responsible for shaping and delivering the full communications agenda across the region, both inside and outside the company. You will build clear narratives around products, company culture, and major policy topics, while partnering closely with leaders across sales, product, policy, legal, marketing, and other teams.
The position calls for a leader who is strategic, quick-thinking, highly collaborative, and comfortable juggling multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment. You will guide a team of communicators, manage budgets and agency partnerships, and help ensure Google’s messages are consistent, timely, and impactful across audiences including journalists, creators, advertisers, partners, employees, and other opinion leaders.
Indigenous applicants
Google welcomes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants and is committed to reconciliation through its technology, platforms, and people. The company encourages Indigenous candidates to apply and references its Reconciliation Action Plan for additional context.
What you will do
You will design integrated communications strategies, create multi-channel storytelling plans, support senior executives with media preparation, and build strong relationships with external voices across the region. You will also look for innovative ways to amplify messaging, including the thoughtful use of AI.
Minimum qualifications
Applicants need a bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience, along with at least 15 years of communications experience in business and media settings. The role also requires experience building media relationships, writing external communications, working with social media creators and podcasters, shaping communications strategies, and acting as a communications partner to senior executives and leadership teams.
Preferred qualifications
Additional strengths include senior communications leadership experience in a consumer technology company with multiple products, people management experience in large multinational organizations, and change management exposure. A strong understanding of consumer technology, advertising technology, and the policy environment is important, including familiarity with artificial intelligence, online safety, privacy, and security. Candidates should also have well-developed relationships across consumer, business, and technology media in ANZ.
Responsibilities
- Build and run long-range, multi-channel communication and storytelling programs for products and initiatives.
- Create and maintain trusted relationships with editors, creators, influencers, product reviewers, and other important partners across ANZ.
- Coach executives and senior leaders for media interviews and press events, while overseeing PR agencies handling everyday questions, special projects, and event-related support.
- Find new ways to deliver messaging to priority audiences and use AI to improve reach and effectiveness.
- Guide, develop, and manage a team of experienced communicators, including team budgets and operational planning.
Equal opportunity
Google states that it is an equal opportunity workplace and an affirmative action employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or veteran status. The company also considers qualified applicants with criminal histories where permitted by law and offers accommodations for applicants who need disability or special assistance.
Additional information

You are expected to be entrepreneurial, intellectually curious, and comfortable working across teams under tight deadlines. The work involves helping audiences understand Google’s products, culture, and public policy positions clearly and consistently.
