Job description

About LOVB

League One Volleyball (LOVB) is building a new future for women’s sports. Founded in 2019, the organization combines sports performance, training, and media with a mission to elevate volleyball in the United States and create more opportunities for the next generation of female athletes.

Volleyball is at a unique inflection point in the U.S. It is the most played girls’ youth sport, with 38 million current and former players, and it is the only major sport where the vast majority of participants are women. Even so, the category has long been overlooked by traditional investors, sponsors, and media partners.

LOVB is addressing that gap by building a strong club foundation, growing a loyal audience, and using that base to develop a leading professional league and a connected digital ecosystem. The organization is looking for a mission-driven team member who is excited to help reshape professional volleyball and women’s sports from the ground up.

Role Overview

The Director of Communications will lead and coordinate communications across the LOVB ecosystem, spanning youth, club, professional, media, content, events, partnerships, and corporate work. Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Strategy, this role turns business priorities into clear messages, strategic plans, and engagement opportunities that strengthen the brand and protect its reputation.

This is a hands-on leadership role that blends strategy with execution. The person in this position will directly drive important communications work while also guiding additional support focused on Pro communications and media relations. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, thoughtful storyteller, skilled organizer, and collaborative partner who can move quickly in a high-growth environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and implement communication plans that advance organizational priorities across the full LOVB ecosystem.
  • Work with senior leaders to convert business goals into compelling messaging and storytelling programs.
  • Maintain the LOVB story bank, core narrative, and messaging framework so communications stay consistent across audiences and channels.
  • Own the annual communications calendar, including major announcements, launches, partnerships, events, and milestone moments.
  • Spot opportunities to amplify LOVB’s mission, athletes, leaders, and business initiatives through strategic storytelling.
  • Coordinate communication priorities across teams to keep messaging aligned and execution on track.
  • Work with the Head of Media Relations on earned media strategy, outside communications, and story development.
  • Provide editorial direction for press releases, media outreach, executive messaging, and large announcements.
  • Coordinate communications support for significant events, partnerships, executive appearances, and organizational updates.
  • Track media coverage, industry developments, and public sentiment to surface opportunities and manage risk.
  • Act as a communications partner to executives, staff, and athletes, with support from the Manager of PR/Comms, Pro.
  • Develop talking points, speeches, presentations, key messages, and other executive communications materials.
  • Support storytelling for athletes, coaches, executives, and the organization as a whole.
  • Collaborate with content, social, and marketing teams to identify and expand compelling stories across the ecosystem.
  • Assist with crisis communications planning and coordinate responses during sensitive or high-profile situations.
  • Partner with Legal, People Success, Sport, and business leaders on issues that could affect the organization’s reputation.
  • Keep stakeholders informed, aligned, and prepared for major communications efforts.
  • Work with the People Success team to align internal communications around organizational priorities.
  • Manage and support additional communications resources focused on Pro communications, media relations, and external agency relationships.
  • Partner with leaders in Marketing, Sport, Partnerships, Media/Content, and Strategy on integrated communications programs that support business objectives.
  • Set priorities and allocate resources to maximize impact across communications work.
  • Serve as a hands-on leader who balances planning with direct execution.

Required Qualifications

  • Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Strong background in storytelling, messaging, and executive communications.
  • Excellent skills in project management, organization, and prioritization.
  • Ability to think strategically while also handling day-to-day execution.
  • Sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive or visible matters.
  • Capability to build alignment and influence across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Collaborative, resourceful, and ready to take a practical, hands-on approach.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related discipline.
  • At least 8 years of progressive communications experience, ideally in sports, media, entertainment, consumer brands, or fast-growing companies.
  • Experience building and delivering integrated communications plans and storytelling initiatives.
  • Experience supporting executive communications and broader organizational messaging.
  • Experience managing agencies, consultants, contractors, or direct reports is preferred.
  • Background in entrepreneurial, rapidly scaling, or resource-constrained environments is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in professional sports, media, content, entertainment, or agency settings is a plus.

Additional Information

This role is classified as exempt and reports to the Chief of Staff and Strategy. It is based remotely in the United States, with occasional travel for site visits and business-related events.

The position sits within Department Code 302: Central Support and is focused on cross-functional communications leadership across the organization.

The role is described as full-time and includes oversight of communications resources supporting Pro communications, media relations, and external agency partnerships.

As a mission-led organization, LOVB is focused on expanding opportunities in women’s volleyball and building a connected community around the sport.

Workplace Expectations

This position requires a balance of strategic planning, editorial judgment, stakeholder management, and direct execution. The successful candidate should be comfortable moving between big-picture communications planning and hands-on delivery.

The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and growth-oriented, with an expectation that the role will help shape both internal and external communications practices.
