Director of Behavioral Health

Position Overview

The Director of Behavioral Health is responsible for providing comprehensive strategic, operational, administrative, and clinical leadership to Fenway Health's Behavioral Health Department. This multidisciplinary department consists of over 60 staff members within a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Director oversees the performance of all Behavioral Health programs including outpatient services, integrated behavioral health, psychiatry operations, clinical education, training, and the Violence Recovery Program. Collaborating closely with the Medical Director and other clinical leaders, the Director ensures delivery of high-quality, equitable, and patient-centered behavioral health care aligned with Fenway Health’s mission and strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all Behavioral Health programs and services, supervising clinical managers and teams including the Medical Director and Violence Recovery Program leadership.
• Develop departmental strategic plans, set annual goals and priorities in coordination with department leaders.
• Create workforce plans addressing clinical demand forecasting, recruitment, retention, succession planning, and expansion.
• Ensure effective communication and collaboration across Behavioral Health leadership and with other Fenway Health departments.
• Oversee care delivery across in-person, telehealth, and hybrid modalities.
• Establish and maintain standards for quality, access, patient experience, and clinical excellence; manage quality improvement and regulatory compliance initiatives.
• Collaborate with Medical Director on psychiatric services and promote integration with Primary Care, Public Health, Nursing, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Dental, Optometry, and other departments.
• Manage departmental budgets, monitor financial performance, productivity, staffing, and compliance with various funding and regulatory requirements.
• Develop and implement strategic priorities for new behavioral health initiatives and program growth.
• Represent Behavioral Health internally at leadership meetings and externally with community partners and statewide initiatives.
• Directly supervise and support hiring, coaching, evaluations, and development of assigned managers and supervisors.
• Maintain approximately seven clinical service hours weekly including assessments and treatment.
• Participate in agency quality improvement, safety, policy adherence, ongoing training, and professional development.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Master's degree in social work, mental health, or related field.
• Independent licensure to practice in Massachusetts.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in behavioral health practice.
• At least 5 years of advanced leadership experience overseeing behavioral health programs, multidisciplinary teams, or integrated services, ideally in multiple clinical locations.
• Proven supervisory and management skills with a focus on accountability, collaboration, and equity.
• Experience and demonstrated commitment to work effectively with diverse populations, including LGBTQIA+ communities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous leadership experience within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).

• Able to work at a computer for extended periods and perform keyboarding tasks.
