Diabetic Eye Screening Programme Screener/Grader

Role overview

The post holder will carry out retinal screening clinics for people living with diabetes across North Central London, making sure the service delivers a consistent, high-quality screening and grading process. The role involves working with a wide range of patients, including individuals with learning disabilities or dementia, teenagers, older adults, people who are highly knowledgeable about their condition, and those who may have limited English communication skills. Every patient must be treated with the same level of professionalism and respect.

Work location and travel

This is a multi-site programme, so the role requires supporting clinics in different settings. Travel will be part of the job. Grading is carried out at the North Middlesex site, and the post holder will be expected to work across 4 to 5 clinic locations. Evening clinics and Saturday working may be required.

Training and qualification pathway

If the selected candidate does not already hold the full HSD screening qualification, they may be appointed as a trainee band 4 at 70% of the salary. Once the qualification is completed, they will move to the full salary. The service will enrol the person on the course and provide support throughout the qualification process.

Service context

The screening programme is commissioned to provide eye screening for more than 100,000 people with diabetes across North Central London. The service covers Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. Clinics run from eight hospital and community locations, while administration, management and grading are based at North Middlesex Hospital. The programme works closely with other diabetes pathway services and is focused on delivering an integrated, patient-centred service of the highest standard.
