Their Obuasi Gold Mine in Ghana is nearing completion of redevelopment to become a modern and highly efficient mining operation producing up to 5,000 tonnes of ore daily.
Role Summary
The Cyanide Champion supports the redevelopment project's steady-state processing goals by ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient management of cyanide within the Process Plant. This position fulfills legal responsibilities under LI 2182 Regulation 219 as the qualified individual overseeing cyanide-related activities and ensuring adherence to the ICMI Cyanide Code.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform critical control reviews, conduct supervisor workplace inspections, and observe/report positive or hazardous conditions along with task observations.
- Assess and control risks of tasks before and during their execution; report incidents promptly and ensure timely investigation and corrective measures.
- Implement assigned corrective actions, achieving full compliance with occupational health and safety KPIs targeting zero incidents and injuries.
- Lead the team in fulfilling environmental responsibilities, conduct formal meetings, report procedure weaknesses, and attend relevant environmental training.
- Investigate environmental incidents and compile reports with recommendations for management.
- Enhance safety performance by promoting health, safety, environmental measures, and proper housekeeping; ensure availability of personal protective equipment for cyanide handling.
- Support employee training compliance with cyanide handling regulations, maintain safe training environments, and identify further training needs according to ICMI standards.
- Manage all training logistics and performance tracking related to cyanide, extending training initiatives to partners, suppliers, and service providers.
- Maintain cyanide-related procedural documentation, ensure evidence of code compliance is up to date, and coordinate compliance certification efforts.
- Conduct inspections and audits to guarantee ongoing conformity with the ICMI Cyanide Code and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee procurement and reception of cyanide, managing the cyanide sparging facility and related stock reporting.
- Contribute to the development and revision of cyanide procedures and ensure calibration and operability of cyanide instruments.
- Coordinate with community and sustainability groups to facilitate cyanide awareness and safety sensitization programs.
- Lead emergency response activities related to cyanide and chemical exposures within the Process Plant.
- Evaluate cyanide training effectiveness and update materials as necessary.
- Collaborate with metallurgists to optimize cyanide and lime usage for gold recovery and environmental compliance.
- Assist in budgeting and cost management of cyanide sparging operations and PPE supplies.
- Work cross-functionally with various departments including Engineering, Health & Safety, and Mining to ensure smooth equipment maintenance and operational safety.
- Note: This role carries no direct managerial or financial authority.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical, Chemical, Minerals, or Materials Engineering.
- Trainer certification in cyanide handling is advantageous.
- Basic first aid certification is a plus.
- Minimum of two years’ experience working in gold processing plant metallurgy.
- Proven experience in cyanide sparging, mixing, and storage facilities.
- Demonstrated ability in conducting training and coordinating educational programs within a metallurgical plant.
Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding of the ICMI Cyanide Code and related certification processes.
- Solid grasp of gold processing unit operations.
- Proficiency in computer use and presentation delivery.
- Clear comprehension of hazards related to cyanide handling and associated instrumentation.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow routine and time-sensitive tasks rigorously.
- Self-motivated with accountability and goal-oriented mindset.
- Familiarity with Minerals and Mining Regulations, LI 2182, governing cyanide use.
