Job description
About Clerky
Clerky builds software that simplifies legal paperwork for startups and the attorneys who work with them. The company is profitable, expanding in a steady way, and is widely used by fast-growing technology startups for incorporation, hiring, and fundraising tasks.
As a Customer Operations & Writing Specialist, you will represent the company to founders, investors, and attorneys who rely on Clerky to complete important legal work, often under tight deadlines. The business grows largely through referrals, so customer care and high-quality support are central to how it operates.
Why this role is different
Customer support here is more demanding than in many other environments because the questions are often nuanced, specialized, and not always straightforward. Success in the role depends on careful thinking, strong writing judgment, and a willingness to revise and improve based on feedback. You will also build practical knowledge of startups and startup law as part of the work.
The learning curve is ongoing, and the role requires sustained concentration. It is not a fit for someone who wants a job where the material can be quickly mastered and then repeated with little mental effort. It may suit someone who enjoys learning continuously and taking on complex problems.
Many customer questions do not have a single definitive answer. In those cases, the goal is often to help customers understand the relevant information well enough to decide for themselves, or to recognize when a clear answer is not available. If you prefer a role built around giving direct answers in every situation, this may not be the right match.
What you'll do
- Respond to customer emails with clear, empathetic, and well-reasoned writing using Help Scout.
- Create and update help center content, and identify recurring questions that should be turned into new articles.
- Partner with engineers to investigate and troubleshoot software problems reported by customers.
- Use the company’s software to help develop and manage new ways for customers to complete legal paperwork.
- Support the product team by testing new features and bug fixes, while sharing customer insights and feedback.
- Identify patterns in customer issues and raise them to the wider team when attention is needed.
Requirements
- Strong genuine interest in helping people.
- High emotional intelligence.
- Strong logical and analytical thinking.
- Excellent written English, with the ability to be precise and concise.
- Very strong attention to detail.
- Comfort working independently in a remote setting.
- Confidence using new software without needing formal training.
- Enjoys frequent feedback and iterative improvement, including multiple rounds in a single day.
- Self-driven and motivated to consistently do excellent work.
How the team works
Clerky has operated remotely for many years and is comfortable with distributed work. The team is small, so each person’s contribution has a visible impact. Work is done efficiently, independently, and with mutual respect.
The culture is open and collaborative, and team members support one another in succeeding. You will work closely with colleagues to deliver strong customer support and a positive customer experience.
Everyone is trusted to manage their productivity, and schedules are flexible as long as coverage needs are met. The company also provides a budget for books, courses, tools, and other learning resources to support growth in the role.
Compensation and benefits are positioned at the top of the market, along with the chance to learn deeply while helping customers during an important stage in their lives.
Location and work arrangement
This is a fully remote position. You may work from home or from another location of your choice. It is not a good fit for someone with a travel-heavy or constantly changing location lifestyle.
Additional notes
No legal background or prior legal experience is required or preferred. The hiring process may use AI tools to assist with screening applications, reviewing resumes, or evaluating responses, but human reviewers make the final hiring decision.
