Job description

Overview

As a Critical Environment Technician within Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) organization, you will help keep datacenter infrastructure running safely and reliably. The role involves coordinating with suppliers and vendors, identifying safe and unsafe work conditions, understanding critical environment equipment at a practical level, carrying out maintenance tasks, responding to onsite incidents with other facilities professionals, and monitoring equipment and operational performance through telemetry and related tools.

CO+I powers Microsoft’s cloud services and supports the infrastructure behind products such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. The team emphasizes employee growth through training, Career Rotation Programs, Diversity & Inclusion initiatives, and professional certifications.

Microsoft operates a global datacenter network spanning more than 200 datacenters across 32 countries, supporting over 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in more than 90 countries. Sustainability, optimization, and continuous improvement are central to datacenter design and operations.

Microsoft’s culture is built around a growth mindset, innovation, collaboration, respect, integrity, accountability, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical specialist in one major area of critical environment operations, such as electrical, mechanical, controls, or generators, and handle advanced work independently.
  • Regularly inspect critical facility assets, including building systems, grounds, controls, HVAC, and mechanical equipment, and escalate any unsafe or unusual conditions in line with policy and standards.
  • Use the internal computerized maintenance management system to record assets and process maintenance work orders.
  • Respond quickly and safely to abnormal conditions, lead onsite incident response efforts, and work with other critical facilities professionals to complete corrective repairs without direct supervision.
  • Develop, update, or apply emergency operating procedures, methods of procedure, and standard operating procedures for critical environment work and incidents.
  • Carry out planned, predictive, and corrective maintenance and repairs on equipment such as electrical, mechanical, and cooling systems, following approved procedures with limited oversight.
  • Apply practical troubleshooting knowledge to equipment, systems, subsystems, and components within the trained discipline.
  • Advise junior colleagues when they need support diagnosing systems or problems.
  • Follow safety, security, and business process requirements, including job hazard assessments, environmental health and safety practices, and toolbox talks, to deliver work safely and reliably.
  • Represent Microsoft’s culture and values in day-to-day work.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, plus some experience in mission-critical services or applied learning in high-availability environments such as datacenters, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical operations, manufacturing, or similar fields.
  • Or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Willingness to travel between sites as required for the role, with a valid driver’s license.

Background check requirements: You must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements. This includes passing the Microsoft Cloud background check at hire or transfer and again every two years.

Preferred:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent with solid mission-critical services experience in high-availability environments such as datacenters, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical operations, manufacturing, or similar fields.
  • Or an Associate’s Degree, technical trade certification, or higher-equivalent education plus 3+ years of mission-critical services experience in comparable environments.
  • Or equivalent experience.
