Job description

About the Role

The Eighth Judicial District Court in Nevada is inviting applications for the position of Court Law Clerk, an ideal opportunity for recent graduates of law school either awaiting bar exam results or recently licensed attorneys seeking practical experience within the judiciary. The role involves assisting judicial personnel through detailed legal research, drafting of legal documents, and supporting project coordination efforts.

This position is intended as a limited scope role to develop essential legal research and writing skills for those preparing for or newly admitted to the Bar. Work assignments may differ depending on placement within a court or legal office but consistently require applying legal research techniques and drafting skills under established guidelines. Unlike paraprofessional Legal Research Assistants who focus primarily on specialized research and clerical support, this role demands a broader engagement in legal tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal and factual research using both computerized databases and traditional law library resources as directed by attorneys or judges.
  • Interpret and apply statutory laws, case decisions, and other legal authorities to draft legal briefs, pleadings, and related documents.
  • Prepare memoranda, legal opinions, and written analyses concerning specific cases or legal questions.
  • Clarify and communicate procedural information pertinent to departmental, county, and state operations to support staff and attorneys.
  • Enhance work unit efficiency by participating actively in team initiatives and suggesting improvements.
  • Maintain comprehensive records and files; generate assorted reports as required.
  • Utilize typical office technology, including computers, in daily tasks.
  • May occasionally operate personal or county vehicles for work-related activities.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Possession of a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Prior full-time experience in legal research or drafting legal opinions is preferred.
  • Applicants must pass background investigations, which may be repeated post-employment.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States; no H1B visa sponsorship or transfers are available.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening is mandatory.

Additional Information

  • The position is confidential and excluded from union membership.
  • Submission of a detailed resume along with the employment application is required; applications without a resume are incomplete and will not be considered.
  • Applicants may be requested to provide law school transcripts.
  • The job requires standard physical capability to work in an office environment, use equipment, read screens and documents, and communicate effectively. Accommodations are available for qualified individuals with disabilities.
