About the Role
The National Geographic Society's Communication, Marketing and Brand division deploys creative, strategic initiatives to amplify the mission and uphold the organization's reputation as a top nonprofit and global brand. This division includes multiple departments covering various aspects of communication and marketing. The Coordinator for Social Media Community Engagement, under the Social Media and Digital Engagement team in Integrated Brand Marketing, plays a crucial role in expanding the Society's reach and engagement with targeted audiences through social media.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage daily scheduling and publishing of content across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, and YouTube while maintaining the content calendar.
- Engage actively with social media users by responding to comments, direct messages, mentions and tags aligned with the Society's brand voice, under supervisory guidance.
- Identify and participate in cultural conversations and opportunities beyond scheduled content.
- Monitor social accounts of National Geographic Explorers, and in coordination with supervisors, highlight high-quality user-generated content to tell diverse stories.
- Research and build connections with emerging content creators for potential collaboration.
- Coordinate accurate and timely social media responses by collaborating with internal teams and the community of Explorers.
- Alert supervisors to comments posing reputational risks and assist in mitigating potential crises following established protocols.
- Develop and update social listening reports to track conversations, sentiment, and trends related to the Society and brand; brainstorm untagged mentions and fresh marketing opportunities.
- Perform regular audits comparing social presence with competitors and generate campaign or risk assessment reports as necessary.
- Support analytics reporting on community engagement metrics such as growth, sentiment, and interaction rates; share insights with broader teams to refine strategies.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree preferred, with certifications in digital marketing or social media considered a plus.
- At least two years of experience managing social media or digital platforms.
- Familiarity with major social media outlets and emerging platforms relevant to audience engagement.
- Proficiency in social media tools like Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or Sprinklr for scheduling, analytics, community management, and listening.
- Excellent organizational skills to juggle multiple projects and priorities within fast-paced environments.
- Strong communication skills to maintain a consistent and compelling brand voice.
- Effective teamwork and collaboration capabilities.
- Bonus: Experience with social media strategies for brands/nonprofits, influencer or creator community management, and spotting social media trends.

- No direct supervisory responsibilities.
- Competitive hourly pay range from $25.13 to $26.45.
